3.0 out of 5 stars The good, the bad, and the down right strange November 7, 2013

Every year I scour magazines, online, books, looking for something to make besides the same old cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, rolls, pies.. umm.. actually that sounds so good, but sometimes a twist is nice. Good Eating's foray into Thanksgiving isn't just a twist, it's a whole Chubby Checker song, it's a meeting with Stephen King's "Mangler," it's a thanksgiving through the ringer!

First there is a nice standard roasted turkey recipe, with a cider glaze. The glaze has honey and apple cider and sounds sweet but not weird. Next comes a recipe for turkey soup to use up the leftover turkey. Okay.. standard but I'm with them. Next is a thanksgiving loaf with a strange introduction saying this is good if you're sick of family and friends and dietary restrictions. Okay...but the loaf actually sounds interesting, turkey, onions, sweet potato, cranberries, bacon. Three recipes in, so far so good, although the first two are just standard. Nothing new here....

Basic gravy, flour less gravy option for a gluten free diet is a nice touch, andouille sausage dressing, basic mashed potatoes. So far nothing new or exciting but nothing odd either. Tangy potato salad, hmm.. unusual but living in a city where we drop a scoop of potato salad on gumbo it isn't that far out, maybe for the rest of the country though it might not fly. Hmm, another potato salad recipe, this time german potato salad. Looks at cover, yep, thanksgiving... okay...

Sweet potatoes get a new twist with curried marshmallows using curry powder, thai curry paste and coconut milk, that could be interesting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tradition vs. something new December 8, 2013

My family is very traditional when it comes to holiday food so trying new things is frowned upon. This book offered several of our traditional foods with a twist and my family actually liked them.
