Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Manhattan's tiny Good Enough to Eat restaurant is a local treasure. Featuring delicious breakfast fare, it's become the better-come-early stop of choice for fabulous omelets, pancakes, blintzes, waffles, and more. The Good Enough to Eat Breakfast Book, by the restaurant's chef-owner, Carrie Levin, offers over 150 of the spot's best recipes for its famed American dishes. Those of us who wish we could eat breakfast three times a day, as well as anyone hankering for the likes of a Vermont Cheddar-Apple Omelet, Sour Cream Coffee Cake with Crumb Topping, and Lemon Poppy Seed Waffles, will be delighted.

In chapters that cover the full range of breakfast specialties--from eggs (Levin supplies 20 recipes for these alone) to waffles, French toast, quick and yeast breads, doughnuts, and more--Levin presents easy, approachable formulas. Also included are tips and techniques (her beating method ensures creamy, golden scrambled eggs), serving ideas, and recipes for condiments like the house's beloved strawberry butter. Included also are chapters on salads and sides like hashed brown potatoes, spoonbread, and broccoli slaw, as well as brunch menus and beverage recipes like those for Pink Cherry Lemonade and Coconut Grapefruit Smoothie. It's hard to imagine a better compilation of start-the-day recipes, or one that's easier to put to use. --Arthur Boehm --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yummy addition to your cookbook catalog, July 5, 2003

Having seen a profile of the restaurant and its owner on national t.v. some time ago, I was eager to visit this place and taste what everyone was raving about. Now that we've taken that maiden trip, are we glad we did! The recipes in the book include every kind of yummy breakfast treat you can imagine. (The coconut and chocolate chip Peter Paul Pancakes are my fave!) If you have the time and patience to fuss over breakfast and don't just want to grab an apple and cup of coffee as you race out the door, this is a great way to enjoy Breakfast as a main meal of the day, and treat your family to something special too. The recipes are straightforward and easy to follow. The author (who is also the restaurant owner)has a friendly and easy to read style and it makes the cookbook more than just a step by step instructional. If you are ever in New York City, stop by this place on the Upper East Side and see for yourself why Carrie Levin has earned such a great reputation in her business.

The hashbrowns are my favorite. The way she cooks bacon is brilliant. The muffins are worth the price!

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed., February 10, 2010

I thought this book would be great for brunch-style breakfast dishes as I often have overnight guests and like to have pre-made dishes in the refrigerator so that I don't spend the morning at the stove. This book, while does have what look like tasty recipes, is mostly things like eggs and pancakes and waffles, all things that need to be done at the last minute. I was so disappointed I gave it away.
