4.0 out of 5 stars Paul "gets on the right thing"-highly recommended 2 cd/2 dvd set, November 24, 2009
This review is from: Good Evening New York City: Deluxe Edition (2 CD & 2 DVD) (Audio CD)
Paul McCartney's released many live CDs and DVDs but this is the best of the bunch he's released. Here's why; 1)We get the whole concert 2)the performances are dazzling (and Paul's in exceptiona voice--no Autotune or any processing device was used to augment Paul's voice)including a brief detour into a cover of a Jimi Hendrix tune (he shares a story about Hendrix having learned "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" even though it had just been released. Hendrix's guitar went out of tune and he asked if Eric Clapton was in the audience so he could tune it for him). 3)We get a healthy dose of Beatles songs (including "A Day in the Life" melded with Lennon's "Give Peace A Chance"), Wings tunes, Fireman and McCartney solo hits. 4)We get to hear the concert and see it on a bonus DVD AND Best Buy has a 2 CD/2DVD set (available only as an import here)in a nice book with McCartney's "David Letterman" live roof top show.

Sound-I'd give it a B for the CDs--they sound good not too loud, compressed or maximized could they sound better? Sure but for a contemporary CD this sounds good. The sound on the DVDs I'd give an A--they sound exceptionally clear, crisp with nice detail. The picture on the DVDs (I watched it upscaled on my Blu-ray player)looks exceptional as well. Would I have liked a Blu-ray option for this? Sure but the DVD looks just fine upscaled with nice detail although you'll notice it isn't quite as sharp as a Blu-ray.

Is Macca using Autotune here? The engineer that worked with Geoff Emerick on this Paul Hicks has indicated that there is no Autotune used on the album. Could there be a variation being used here? Possibly but this is still to me the best of his concerts on video.

The Letterman Show is terrific. McCartney and his band do a root top concert (sort of)at the Ed Sullivan Theater where The Beatles first appeared live for U.S. audiences for the first time changing history for themselves, us and altering music.

If you can find the 2 CD/DVD set pick it up (Best Buy is sold out on line but they fail to mention that MOST stores have them or had them in stock) or pick up the import.

Unlike previous McCartney shows (McCartney directed this himself)this one doesn't intercut performances with interviews and we only briefly get shots done by fans using the digital cameras distributed at the show(only one where the song is interrupted and it's fairly early on outside of "I'm Down". All of which makes this a BIG improvement on previous concert DVD/CD sets. The healthy variety of songs from throughout his long career along with the appearence of Billy Joel for "I Saw Her Standing There" (and the fact that, in my opinion, this is the best backing band he's had and I've seen all of them including Wings)makes this one a keeper. During Macca's story about The Beatles playing Shea the show cleverly intercuts Macca and his band playing "I'm Down" contrasting it with The Beatles performance. Just a note that "I'm Down" does appear on the bonus disc from the "Letterman" show uncut without the footage from The Beatles Shea appearence of "I'm Down" interpolated. There's also a brief "documentary" compiled from the digital cameras given to the people in the audience.

Every little thing Paul and his top notch band including Rusty Anderson (guitar, vocals), Brian Ray (guitar, bass, vocals), Abe Laboriel, Jr. (vocals, drums, percussion), Paul "Wix" Wickens (keyboards)do here is nearly perfect. Sure, you could carp about the fact that Paul's lost much of his upper register but he makes up for it here by dropping some of the material here by a step which allows himself to ably tackle the material. For someone who is 68 years old, Macca has a great voice after 45 plus years of entertaining you and me.

If you can't find this 2 DVD, 2 CD set check Paul McCartney's website (although they have been running behind in their shipping).

5.0 out of 5 stars The DVD is phenomenal!, December 25, 2009

This review is from: Good Evening New York City: Deluxe Edition (2 CD & 2 DVD) (Audio CD)
Ok, so I am biased. I am a 55 year old man who unashamededly says that Paul is his hero. Finally we have a dvd that captures the McCartney concert performance in toto, both visually and aurally. Finally the viewer will not get vertigo watching this video, for the most part this video focuses upon the band. Sound quality on the DVD is outstanding, I am quite disappointed in the fidelity of the cds. I really would like to hear from anyone who can tell me about another performer who deeply touches a more diverse range of individuals (in the world) and completely enraptures them concert long. It is his humanity, his openess, his creative brilliance which taps into universal emotions that makes Macca the most influential and remarkable performer in the world today. And he is still creating and still performing with incredible energy and committment at age 67! To me, it is so touching how Paul seems to allow us to see his genuine emotions associated with music which is personal for him, but a part of all of us.
Yes there are a whole bunch of live McCartney dvds out there. As as person who has them all-- I can say with complete confidence that this is the best of all the McCartney dvds produced. This is a must have purchase. You will not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great For Macca Fans, December 25, 2009
This review is from: Good Evening New York City: Deluxe Edition (2 CD & 2 DVD) (Audio CD)
Great DVD, Great Performance, Great Visuals.

Love how Paul plays all of the old Beatles Classics as they were played back in the day for the most part. Best songs in my opinion are "Here Today" (tribute to John, very sentimental), "Something" (tribute to George), "Jet", "I Saw Her Standing There", "Get Back" and ESPECIALLY "I'm Down" because of video AND ORIGINAL SOUND from the Shea 1965 performance of it spliced in with the 2009 recording and video, which is very nostalgic. For anyone who is truly a McCartney fan, I'd recommend it.

Also, the 2 dvd 2 cd set has great packaging, great for those who enjoy collector's items.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Live McCartney yet, December 25, 2009

This is a great live, greatest hits set. The band is great, he sounds good, the crowd loves it, and everything you'd want to hear is included. The DVD beats the CD hands down, and go hunting for the deluxe version with the free show from the front of the Ed Sullivan Theater in NYC on a bonus DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY IT, December 20, 2009
This review is from: Good Evening New York City: Deluxe Edition (2 CD & 2 DVD) (Audio CD)
Bought my deluxe copy at McCartney's website for a little over $28.00 including shipping. Why pay more? They were behind on their shipping as stated in a review. But the 27 day wait was worth it. The Letterman disc is really good with a nice tight 35 minute 7 song gig. With that DVD and the hardcover book it brings it up to 5 stars. Without those two, 4 stars. I personally like Part 1 of the 3 parts on the screen options of the concert because it perfectly divides Beatles, Wings, Early Solo and current solo. The last part is Beatle heavy ending with 9 straight Fab Four songs. Touching moment of the concert? Paul's nearly breaking down while singing "Here Today" his John Lennon tribute song from the album Tug Of War.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paul McCartney At His Best, December 2, 2009
This review is from: Good Evening New York City: Deluxe Edition (2 CD & 2 DVD) (Audio CD)
I have literally been in love with Paul McCartney since I was a young girl. I have loved the Beatles music -- Lennon and McCartney is unbeatable team. I loved Wings. I have seen Paul at RFK Stadium and Cleveland Stadium back in the late 80's. I thought that was amazing. I have to say that having attended this new concert series at the Redskins stadium a few months back, I was amazed. This wonderful man who has given us so many songs and memories was just AMAZING. He sang and rocked for over 3 hours almost nonstop. His voice was top form, especially for his age. He looked as handsome as ever. I fell in love all over again. It was a high like no other. This CD/DVD set is a wonderful way for me to relive the memory of this event over and over again. I will never get tired of it. Thank you, Paul, for the concert and for putting it on CD/DVD! Unbelievable!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any Macca fan, December 3, 2009
This review is from: Good Evening New York City: Deluxe Edition (2 CD & 2 DVD) (Audio CD)
I was actually at this concert, so I was expecting this not to be as good as being there. I was wrong. The DVD makes me feel like I'm sitting back at Citi Field. The CDs sound amazing too. The 2nd DVD is Paul's gig on the Marquis of the Ed Sullivan Theater when he did Letterman. All discs are pictured like baseballs and have Paul's signature printed on them. They are enclosed in a great colorful booklet of pictures. When I flipped through the pages a card fell out. I picked it up and its a picture of Paul with his signature printed on it and on the back it has #of nights at Citi Field, # of people, stats. It's a baseball card!!! Throughout the concert there is great crowd footage. Paul had a flip camcorder given to him as a gift, so he held a contest for ticket holders. Winners were to use the camcorders at the concert. When they turned it in after, they left their names and addresses. After the concert footage was taken, the camcorders were sent back to the winners. If you want to save some $ you could just get the CDs or the standard edition DVD, but if you are a Paul fan, or you are buying a gift for a Paul fan, this is a must have. I know this is the umteenth millionth live something that Paul has put out, but you won't be sorry!!!!

Sir Paul McCartney is MUSIC incarnate. This special DVD/CD set tops his LIVE performances (2002 and 2005) I experienced in Portland Oregon. A true BARGAIN that nearly replaces seeing him in person at $125-250 a ticket. A quality product from a quality entertainer.

to the best concert CD/DVD ever. You feel like you are actually at the show. Mr. McCartney and his band know how to give the audience what they want and they delivered! Having just seen him live and never wanting that night to end, at least this fantastic set lets me relive that wonderful night over and over again.
