Book Description

September 1, 2001
I found a copy of Henry Miller?s first novel, Crazy Cock, in the bargain bin of a neighborhood bookstore for $4.95. I read it and it made me think about something Chicago Blues legend Bumble-Bee Bob Novak once told me: ?Son, there?s only so many barks in a dog and so many grunts in a hog.? I had never understood what Novak meant until I read Crazy Cock. Miller, like each of us, only had so much to say. We may learn to say it better as we hone our skills, but we can only breathe out what we?ve breathed in. We can only write what we've lived.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Writers often affect toughness and soul through leather jackets, whiskey and cigarettes. Tragic poses. Gary Dobry, the real deal, ignores this crowd and hustles down the streets of Paris and Chicago, flexing his boxer's hands and his poet's soul. His writing is dark and swift, and it will hit you hard. You'd better have a good cut-man in your corner if you're going to step in the ring with this book." —Luis Alberto Urrea, author of Across the Wire and Nobody's Son

"Dobry is a Renaissance man of the 21st Century!" —Ed Paschke, Artist and Professor at Northwestern University

"Gary Dobry works words like a good boxer does his jab. Dobry can box and paint but most of all he can write!" —Jay Marvin, WLSAM 890 Radio talk show host, author of Punk Blood and The White Trash Chronicles

"Gary Dobry is an American ex-boxer, now turned author and visionary artist. He has used his experiences in the ring to produce allegorical, hauntingly beautiful iconographic images." —Henry Boxer, gallery owner and art dealer

About the Author

Gary Dobry retired from the ring in 1998. He is the owner of Pug's Boxing Gym, located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. He is a painter and a writer. Dobry studied at the Université de Paris, earned his Diplôme de Français at the Sorbonne and was kicked out of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago after having been accepted on the strength of a reference letter from the world-reknowned Ed Paschke. He busked the streets of Paris with Chicago Blues legend 'Bumble-Bee' Bobby Novak before returning to Chicago where his paintings came to the attention of collector, gallery owner and art dealer, Judy A. Saslow, who represents the artist. Dobry has shown with the likes of Ed Paschke and Andy Warhol.

What relation this book is to Paris is unknown. No direction, plot or sense - a bit like a comic book...
No Thanks.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Jay Marvin, June 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: In Good Faith (Paperback)
After reading both of Mr. Dobry's books, I've concluded one thing. He is no Jay Marvin. Dobry's writing is both mundane and lazy. Mr. Marvin's books are loaded with brim and fire. The reader actually feels as though he or she is living Jay's experience. One page of his writings has the mercury rising to 110 degrees. The next page it can easily dip to 40 below zero.

Pick up "Punk Blood" written by Marvin. And be prepared for some mesmerizing story telling. Check out his poetry and art work as well. Spell-binding. When Mr. Dobry decides to take a few pointers from Jay, then maybe I'll consider buying his next book......if he writes one. Gary Dobry would do himself a favor by viewing some of the spectacular and stirring art put out by Jay Marvin as well. I know Dobry says he's an artist. Compared to Mr. Marvin, he's a small fish in a big artistic pond. Admitting is the first step to cure. Mr. Dobry should admit he's no Jay Marvin and ask Jay to give him a few pointers in both writing.....and art.
