This book is an autobiography of the life of Shirley Chisholm. It focuses mainly on the opposition she faced as the first African American woman to run for President and deals with the goals and reforms that she hoped to accomplish if elected.

The late Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm (1924 - 2005) wrote this book after her unsuccessful campaign for the Democratic nomination for the 1972 presidential election. While she tries to remain impartial, giving credit where it is due, her writing still exudes some bitterness over her loss. Still, she makes some valid points e.g. that the control of the country will always remain in the hands of the wealthy.
Included in the book are two appendices including papers which Mrs. Chisholm wrote explaining various positions she held during the campaign and speeches which she made. What is interesting for the modern reader is to see how far we have come since that turbulent era...and how far we haven't!
