Good Food in Mexico City: A Guide to Food Stalls,Fondas, and Fine Dining,
This review is from: Good Food in Mexico City: A Guide to Food Stalls, Fondas and Fine Dining (Paperback)
As a cultural/culinary tour guide in Mexico City I have depended on my own notes and various other sources for my information (www.mexicosoulandessence.com).
Now it's all in one small but BIG book. For Mexico City aficionados, at last a comprehensive guide to eating out in the D.F. ( Distrito Federal) . With an insiders knowledge Nicolas Gilman takes you from street food to Alta Cocina Mexicana. Everything you need including maps, current phone numbers and street directions. You can't get lost, you won't be disappointed!

I'm Getting Hungry,
This review is from: Good Food in Mexico City: A Guide to Food Stalls, Fondas and Fine Dining (Paperback)
This is the book I was hoping for. My best memories of Mexico tend to be of and around food. Planning another trip to Mexico City, I've been through the mainstream guidebooks, which are generally out of date and written at "arm's distance" from the food, the restaurants and the people who prepare it. Not the case with this book. I now have more options for great food than I will have time to exercise. Cantinas that serve free botanas (appetizers) with drinks? Yes. Particularly good food stalls in the mercados? Check. Maybe a quality Spanish restaurant in El Centro? Got it. Let's see, I know one night I'll want birria for dinner. Luckily Taqueria Tlaquepaque is around the corner from my hotel, and it's open until 9 p.m.
If you're going to visit Mexico City (or live there now) and like good food, buy this book. For making reservations at fine dining restaurants to finding a great cup of coffee on the spur of the moment, this book can't be beat.

I also highly recommend Mexico City: An Opinionated Guide for the Curious Traveler

Nick not only knows how to eat he knows how to cook. He has a sharp eye and a great palate.
One of the great mysteries in a large City is where to eat. Nick solves the mystery for you.

Delicious Book!,
This review is from: Good Food in Mexico City: A Guide to Food Stalls, Fondas and Fine Dining (Paperback)
This is the ONLY guidebook one needs for Mexico City! The restaurants and cafés and stalls cover a wide range of tastes and price ranges - not just the Usual Suspects one finds in all mainstream guidebooks. The best thing to do in Mexico City is EAT. Bring along this book and your trip will be a truly satisfying and memorable experience.

This book is essential for foodies and aficionados of Mexican food. Tells you where to eat in Mexico City from the perspective of a resident you knows the real thing. The range of high/low places is good and the glossary is helpful.
I also recommend: Mexico City: An Opinionated Guide for the Curious Traveler

I carried Good Food in Mexico City with me every day of my first visit to DF, and I'm very pleased (and fortunate) to have had it with me. It is a concise - and in my experience, accurate - overview of the vernacular cuisines, restaurants, food stands, and markets of popular areas of an immense city with immense (and often exotic) food options. The type is legible, the order is logical, and the size is portable. It includes a glossary that is especially useful (though not exhaustive), helpful maps, good indices, and there is sound, candid advice on matters such as eating street food. I only scratched the surface but I hope to return and this book will certainly be with me.

Just returned from Mexico City (January 2009) used this book as a guide and only wished that I had had more time to check out each and every one of his suggestions. Because of his comments I even ate so-called 'street food.' In a word -- yum.
