Profoundly Good Photography,
By Adam Gori (Chapel Hill, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Good Girls (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful and, I think, an important book. The photographs are sincere in their questioning and in their treatment and respect of a complex and challenging subject. The women photographed are, culturally speaking, commodified sexual objects, coerced by poverty or outright kidnapping into sexual service, their existence pushed underground, their bodies and spirits battered and traumatized. Ms. Goded succeeds in photographing the spirit and the inwardness of these women. It is a deeply moving and challenging book. The photographs themselves are rich and profoundly seen, and truly they transcend irrelevant questions of good or bad photographs. They exist, and in this instance that is what matters. They are an example of what photography can do if approached with understanding, with a purity of spirit, and a reverence for life.

I am sorry, but...,

only 2 photos made me stop for more than a second because there was some profound emotion visible on the people photographed, the other photos were simply bleh
I'm sorry I bought it. I can't even give it away since I'm so unimpressed by it. |
