5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Dreamy Psychedelia
This album is one of the most unique I have ever listened to. With its dreamy, reverb drenched atmosphere and trippy, psychedelic arrangements, this album truly is a cool experience. Starting off with the simple but wonderful opening riff of Porpoise Head, it travels everywhere from ballads (Kimberley Austin), to psychedelia (Thick of it All), to raunchy punk (Dogs...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sways ok
Enjoyable enough slice of mid 90's alterna-pop from the ex-Janes frontman is a marked turn from a louder, more aggressive debut, with some of the instrumentation benefiting from a more spiritual-centric approach, but ultimately most songs are only fulfilling in that half-satisfying way. Perhaps it is Farrell's last relevant release.

This album is one of the most unique I have ever listened to. With its dreamy, reverb drenched atmosphere and trippy, psychedelic arrangements, this album truly is a cool experience. Starting off with the simple but wonderful opening riff of Porpoise Head, it travels everywhere from ballads (Kimberley Austin), to psychedelia (Thick of it All), to raunchy punk (Dogs Rule the Night), to the dreamy and lazy (Bali Eyes), that makes you feel like you're on a tropical island. Other highlights include Tahitian Moon, Good God's Urge, and Wishing Well, but overall, every song is good. The album is perfect to listen to on a warm, hazy afternoon when you are feeling lazy and sleepy. The production is excellent, and the songs don't take long to absorb. The album is extremely listenable to most people. Anyways, I strongly recommend buying this album, it is sure to be a rewarding purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasing, Consistent And Low-Key, June 3, 2000

After becoming an icon of alternative rock with Jane's Addiction and Lolapalooza, most fans ignored Perry Farrell's followup work with Porno For Pyros. Which is a bit odd, since "Good God's Urge" finds Farrell at his most relaxed and experimental, having a good time cooking up new sounds, composing pleasing melodies and enjoying the Tahitian sun. Although nothing on the album scales the emotionally dramatic heights of the best Janes material, "Good God's Urge" proves that Farrell has honed his songwriting skills to create tasty psych-pop that is weird and catchy at the same time (check out "100 Ways" or "Wishing Well"). The album has a predominantly acoustic tone which might upset some fans, although the old punk-metal Perry pops up on "Dogs Rule The Night", "Tahitian Moon" and the title track. As an overall statement, it is the peak of Porno's short-lived output; the artwork and liner notes are exquisite. As so few musicians these days actually want to create *art* in their music, let's hear it for the few who do.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE WORD< ZEN!!!!, August 23, 1999

This review is from: Good Gods Urge (Audio CD)
This album is not has hardcore as their first album, but for anyone who likes Jane's Addiction's slow stuff like Jane Says and Pets and such, this is a great album. Each song is its own individual experience, there is a song for everyone. THE album in a whole will leave you with a serene zenful experience. I have even fallen asleep to it because it is so hypnotizing. Even the lyrics are great. Buy this album, its a TRIP in a Cd Case!

5.0 out of 5 stars Porno For Pyros - Good God's Urge, October 11, 2005

This album is brilliant. Yes, it's that simple. Highlights include tracks 5 and 10. They're the more mellow tunes. The rest is also pure brilliance though and shows a diverse range of musical genres and performance levels throughout. I'd also go as far to say that the feel of this album is quite surreal. There's twists and turns and up and downs that will always surprise with each listen. It's like a tripped out roller-coaster ride that you'll rarely tire of.

Lastly, I reckon this album is far more musical than anything I've heard from Farrell's previous projects (e.g. compared to earlier tracks from Jane's Addiction). Thus, a person who appreciates more instrumental pieces, the usual chilling and sweet vocals from Perry, and experimental beats won't be disappointed with this album. Just forget about expecting coarse rock guitar and drums though. And yes that's a good thing. Turn it up!

One of the things I like about Perry Farrell, is that he always expresses his love of art and life in his music, and this is no exception. Like the man himself, this is hippie, trippy, punk, funk, and good when drunk. A great mix of styles that comes off as tribal one moment, and dreamy the next. Parts of this remind me more of "Ritual de lo Habitual", than Porno's debut. There are also similarities between this and Perry's solo album "Song yet to be sung", though that's more techno-ish. Of course he can't stick with one project more than a few years at a time, hence another Jane's Addiction album and tour on the way. Good for us all. Whatever your liking, I'm sure you will find something to enjoy in "God's good urge".

5.0 out of 5 stars ... do big oak trees grow, August 11, 2000

Isn't it usual for a band to hit the ground running with their debut album, only to stumble on their second? Then again, when did Perry Farrell ever play by the rules? After the promising but flawed debut, Porno For Pyros got everything right on the follow-up. A more beautifully crafted album you'd be hard pressed to find. There's no point in highlighting specific tracks - every one is a classic. A previous reviewer described this as a trip in a CD case, and that's as good a rap as any. Yet the band can still rock out on the title track and Dogs Rule The Night. It doesn't matter what superlatives you throw at this, they're all inadequate. A masterpiece, pure and simple.

5.0 out of 5 stars HOT, May 6, 2000
This review is from: Good Gods Urge (Audio CD)
This album has been my rock in the past few months and listening to it again reminds me why I love Farell's music so much. This is unmistakenly Perry, without the punches of Jane's Addiction, but with the melodies. Kimberly Austin has to be my standout track and 100 ways is a close follower. This album offers so much more than any of the banal releases I have heard in recent months. It is a steady friend, always to hand when I want a pick up. I've recently been through a stressful period and putting this album on makes me smile. A brilliant pick up and a brilliant direction.

5.0 out of 5 stars I will grow on you!, February 28, 2006

Perry Farrell is without doubt the Bowie of my generation. Each new recording moving into a different direction.
Don't expect a replica of the first Porno's CD. This album definately takes time to grow on you, but it is worth it.
In a era of throw away fabricated pop, Perry remains an artist true to himself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Porno For Pyros - 'Good God's Urge' (Warner Brothers), November 20, 2004
This review is from: Good Gods Urge (Audio CD)
This is the band's second and final release and it's a bid more mellower than their self-titled debut. But,rest assure it's still pretty cool sounding.I'll say this much, that I can truly understand as to why Jane's Addiction disbanded when they did.Porno For Pyros is DEFINITELY a step forward for vocalist Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins. The best two tracks here are "Tahitian Moon" and "Thick Of It All".A couple of others that sort of grabbed my attention are "Dogs Rule The Night","Freeway" and "Ball Eyes".Just an all around good stylish alternative rock CD.
