Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-Marsha begins third grade at Sacred Heart Elementary with a signed resolution to avoid getting into trouble. She is excited about having a new student teacher until Miss Murtland assigns archenemy Roger as her classroom buddy. The girl schemes to get rid of him, but when she tells a lie that results in Roger's suspension from school, she must find the courage to set the situation right. The book's length may be intimidating to younger readers attracted by the title, while older readers may be put off by the age of the protagonist. However, the story integrates humor and serious interpersonal issues well, and fans of McKenna's "Murphy" series (Scholastic) will welcome another encounter with some familiar characters.

From Kirkus Reviews

After years of growing up with Collette Murphy, readers are thrust back in time to see what Sacred Heart Elementary is like from the perspective of one of her two best friends. Marsha has vowed not to get into trouble and to make this school year a good one, especially because she likes the student teacher, Miss Murtland. But Marsha's good intentions and penchant for lying butt up against Roger Friday's natural high spirits; the combination nearly gets one of them tossed out of school. McKenna fans will like this peek at Marsha's motives, often obscure in the other stories, but Roger's scenes are the real pleasure; the author paints an intriguing portrait of a boy who seems deceptively like a potential bully--perfectly exasperating but ultimately shown to be (fairly) well-meaning. The children have funny, typical school quarrels; as a writer of light fare, McKenna again weighs in with a real look at real kids. (Fiction. 8-10) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. 4.0 out of 5 stars Roger vs. Marsha, November 28, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Good Grief ... Third Grade (Paperback)
I really liked this book. I thought it was a good example of what third grade is like.It is the story of two third graders that are having a feud. The feud started a long time ago when Marsha thought that Roger put a dead snake in her locker, but it turned out that it was Kenny Scholtz that really did it. But since Marsha thought Roger did it she was holding a grudge. Even though Marsha doesn't like him he still has a great year. I REALLY liked Roger because he is funny. I like his personality. He has a great attitude. On a scale 1-10 I would rate it 9 and a half. I liked how the author writes about what happens in school. All of the scenes sound just like the ones at school. Ms. McKenna was a teacher so she knows what really happens in third grade. I would like to read more books by Ms. McKenna. If you want to read a good school story you should read Good Grief, Third Grade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Grief Third Grade by Colleen O'Shaughnessy McKenna, January 13, 2010
This review is from: Good Grief ... Third Grade (Paperback)
My book report is about a book named Good Grief Third Grade. This book is about a girl named Marsha who promises her mom and dad that third grade would be her best year. Then Roger Friday ruins her plan by trying to get her into trouble. He comes over to her and bugs her so she slams her desk on his fingers then he fakes pain. When Mrs. Birghes catches him she punishes Marsha. Marsha was relieved to be the first one to get yelled at in her class. She thinks Roger has given her a curse. She tells her friends to tell Roger to take back the snake curse. Roger just thinks she is crazy. He will do anything to ruin Marsha's life. I recommend this book to people who like funny stories and comedy. My favorite part was gym class, when Marsha falls asleep and let's the blue team win. Her coach does not like it when people fall asleep in gym class. Enjoy this story and my book report! MH

5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD GRIEF THIRD GRADE!, September 16, 2008
This review is from: Good Grief ... Third Grade (Paperback)
As a 3rd grade teacher, I am doing a "teacher oral read" of this book. The kids are certainly enjoying the antics of Marsha and Mr. Friday!! Great book to read in the opening weeks of 3rd grade.
