Editorial Reviews

The crystal-blue eyes of Alexis Bledel are the prize for which two men vie in The Good Guy. Tommy (Scott Porter from the TV series Friday Night Lights) has a great life: he's highly placed on Wall Street and has a smart and beautiful girlfriend, Beth (Bledel, Gilmore Girls). But when he tries to turn the awkward Daniel (Bryan Greenberg, The Perfect Score) into his protégé at the firm, Daniel proves to be an unexpected catalyst in Tommy's life--and Beth's. The Good Guy mixes familiar platitudes about men and women with some surprisingly fresh observations about men and women. The characters actually reveal themselves over time, turning out to be different than you might expect. It's far from perfect--the pace is a little too leisurely and some elements are a little too pat (Beth's book club is reading a novel that sounds suspiciously like the movie itself). Nonetheless, The Good Guy never turns predictable and--though the characters all live in million-dollar New York apartments--there are surprisingly realistic touches throughout, an attention to human details that all too often get lost in Hollywood movies. Also featuring Andrew McCarthy (Pretty in Pink) as Tommy's sleazy boss. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

Ambitious young New Yorker Beth (Alexis Bledel) wants it all: a good job, good friends and a good guy to share the city with. Of course that last one is trickiest of all, as Beth discovers when she falls hard for Tommy (Scott Porter), a handsome, young Wall Street hotshot. Just as everything seems to be falling into place, Beth meets Tommy’s shy, clumsy co-worker Daniel (Bryan Greenberg) – and soon learns that the game of love in the big city is a lot like Wall Street – high risk, high reward…and everybody has an angle

If there's one thing I can expect, is that independent studios like Lionsgate will produce anything but a typical hollywood movie for a genre such as this. Part comedy, but mostly drama, the movie doesn't quite belong to a particular type of movie you have come to expect from hollywood, which makes it very unique. Unfortunately, I'd have to say that although I find the script to be quite original, I can't say that I was drawn into the movie by any of the characters.

Perhaps it was the way the characters were written. There's obviously the heroin, the hero and the villian. But for some reason, I find them to be dull and uninspiring. I wanted to feel sorry for the heroin when her world came crashing down, but I couldn't bring myself to sympathize with her. The hero was so two-dimensional it was almost impossible for me to root for him either. He was like a sick puppy waiting to be put down. The only mildly interesting character here was the villian, although halfway through the movie his modus operandi were revealed and he became boring after that. He had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. None.

I suppose the only saving grace to this movie is the fact that it was very well executed, all by young but great seasoned actors. Kudos to Porter, Bledel and Greenberg for elevating this independent movie with a somewhat dull script into something more. Watching Bledel and Greenberg growing up was a real joy here, we have two great actors that have been around tinseltown for years, appearing in TV and films as they mature from teenagers into the attractive and talented adult actors they are today.

There's no lesson to be learnt here, the movie merely offered a brief window into the darkside of humanity that we adults have come to know so well. Note to those who love romantic comedies: You wouldn't want to be watching this movie with the person you're seeing on a date night. You'd be wondering what he/she is doing next Friday night when you're not spending the night together.

Note about the DVD: It's a single layer disc with 91 minutes of film compressed to about 4GB of data. Picture quality is great but the transfer is not particularly clean. It's presented in English Dolby Digital 5.1, and comes with English and Spanish subtitles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Accomplishes what it sets out to do, July 12, 2010

First of all, this movie seems to be billed as some kind of romantic comedy starring Alexis Bledel. It isn't. Rather, it is a character study focusing on narrator / protagonist Tommy (Scott Porter), a charismatic but manipulative Wall Street trader. Secondary focus is placed on his girlfriend Beth (Bledel) and his awkward protege Daniel (Bryan Greenberg) as they try to figure out their place in this Type-A dominated world. The goal is not necessarily to like any of the three characters, just to understand them.

The plot itself is pretty simple but the writer/director compensated by making every attempt to come across as believable and authentic as possible. Usually this hits the mark, but not always. Most of the locations such as offices, apartments, and bars are spot-on and I found most of the dialog and interplay quite believable. On the flip side, while I believe that Alexis Bledel could live in NYC for a while and never have heard of The Cloisters, I find it unfathomable that Beth, an anthropologist, would not. This is a pretty big oversight considering how important a role the excursion to The Cloisters has in establishing Tommy's ability to sweep Beth of her feet. Along these lines, I think the writing went a little too far with the foreshadowing. For example, comparing a book club book to the story itself smacks of trying too hard to be clever.

This leaves the acting. I thought the casting and performances were excellent, with all of the characters fitting the bill perfectly, no matter how minor. This is what I appreciated most about the film - the glimpse into these people's lives provided by the portrayals. They were serious when they mean to be serious, funny when it is meant to be funny, and it all felt genuine. There isn't enough to it to consider a 5* rating, but I believe it is successful in achieving what it sets out to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars a mini-gem of a movie, July 24, 2010
This review is from: The Good Guy (DVD)
This is a very underrated and underpublicized movie that will be remembered 20 years from now. I liked the script, the characters (thumbs up for Andrew McCarthy as "Cash"), the acting, and the scenery. Directing was first rate and the director seems to have excellent potential. The movie had an "authentic" feel to it. Kudos to Bledel for choosing a movie with mature and semi-dark themes. I would like to see Bledel in a movie along the lines of Erin Brokovich rather than Post Grad.
