This cookbook really taught me how to cook, and 5 years later, is still my #1 cookbook- the only one I use. Here's why this is the best cookbook out there:

- Tips, explanations, and pictures for each technique and food type so you can learn *how* to cook.

- Delicious food that covers the range of American cooking and popular ethnic cuisine.

- Recipes require few ingredients, with nothing unnecessary or unusual. The ingredients are things you can easily get. Seasonings are things that you will use again and will help build your pantry- nothing random you will only use once. These are my pet peeves of other cookbooks- haven't found another that doesn't have at least one of these issues.

- Few and simple steps. No crazy gourmet tricks that you as a beginner or normal person just trying to make dinner don't need and will just make cooking a long chore.

- Cooking times are listed, and there are lots of things in the 30 minute range.

- Lots of photos, fun to flip through and get ideas.

- Kind of healthy and light, but not insisting upon it. Lots of veggies, no excessive oils, etc. Nutrition info is listed, surprisingly low calorie.

- Taste level: it lands somewhere between Martha Stewart and Rachel Ray- it's neither fancy nor tacky. It's kind of the Target of cookbooks- everyone from middle America to cities would like it, accessible and egalitarian, but still kind of chic. And affordable in that you won't go broke buying random stuff you'll only use for one recipe.

- If there is one cookbook everyone in America should own, this is it. Kids with a decent palette would eat probably everything in here, and there's a lot of stuff even picky kids would eat. Don't worry, though, this isn't cheesy or dumbed-down.

I have cooked for a lot of years, using my cookbooks and family recipes, with moderate success. I got this book from the library, and my daughter (8) and I cooked a superb dinner of mushroom stew accompanied by asparagus with Dijon vinaigrette. My wife came home, tasted dinner and nearly died of shock. It was that good, and very easy to make.

Anything that allows me and my daughter to read, comprehend, and execute as fine a meal as we did is just Superb!

This book is over 575 pages and covers all the basics. Cooking times, how to debone a chicken, scrambling eggs so they're not runny, kinds of equipment, substitutions...it's all here.

There is no other book needed for the new cook. This has all the information, hundreds of photographs with step by step directions. Any new cook would be happy with this purchase. It's a staple of the cook's library.

The recipe on the Anise Wafers was the easiest and best presentation that I've ever seen. This is all from scratch and so you know it's healthy without MSG and other preservatives.

Definitely a wedding gift.

This is a step above the average food I cook at home. Step by Step instructions and tips are very helpful. I am a good cook and was looking for some more inspiring meals and this has that going for it. I really enjoy this book. Only one draw back so far, I do not care for the binding of the book. After looking through the book for about 2 hours, the back cover was tearing from its binding. So, I took quite sometime and cut the glue and binding from the book, used the paper cutter to cut pages to be all the same, (took off frayed edges after pulling it apart), and placed in a nice 3 ring binder and added separating tabs for the 16 different categories. Happy Meals!

I bought this because I thought it would be a good "basic" cookbook for young adults on their own. Its far from basic. The recipes are fancy and gourmet. Its a very large book and is not in a ring binder. It has some photos but not as many as or user friendly as BH&G cookbook that i bought at the same time. It will be a book that they won't use everyday/week but in time they may want to create a fancy meal for a challenge.

The "Good Housekeeping Step by Step Cookbook" contains an enormous number and variety of recipes in a beautiful book. I wish this book was in a ring or spiral binding, but it's substantial enough that the book will generally stay open when lying flat. The book is not really a beginner’s cookbook as such, though there are plenty of recipes that beginners will be able to conquer; some require a bit more skill. The reason this book is excellent for beginners (or any cook, actually) is because of the outstanding illustrations, a feature missing from many cookbooks. For the price the illustrations of techniques are worthwhile in and of themselves.

Some of the recipes aren't to my taste (no surprise given that there are over 1,000 of them) and I certainly can't vouch for them all, though some are certainly excellent. You can find everything from simple hearty fare to more complex dishes here, and there are bound to be recipes anyone will love. One of the features of the book that I like is the section in the very beginning that explains certain types of "Know How" about things every cook should be aware of (e.g. equipment selection, food safety and storage, grilling, etc.) There's also a useful (though not exhaustive) glossary that may be of help. These features and the "how to" nature of the illustrations makes this book beginner-friendly, though there are better books specifically written for budding cooks.

I think this is a good, utilitarian generalist cookbook that's distinguished by its excellent illustrations (over 1,800 photographs reside within) that has a place in most kitchens.
