The British Museum's collection of medieval seal matrices is largely unparalleled. This publication of papers by international scholars, from a conference at the Museum, presents iconographic studies of European medieval seals. The images on the seals are examined in terms of their user context as indicators of identity and status. The authors are historians, art-historians, archivists and archaeologists. The variety of approaches provides the volume with a rich, interdisciplinary character.

John Cherry was Keeper of the Department of Medieval and Later Antiquities at the British Museum and has curated exhibitions and written many books on medieval art and architecture. James Robinson is curator of the medieval collections in the Department of Prehistory and Europe in the British Museum.
