Book Description

February 27, 2007

When kids start going on TV binges or devouring fistfuls of cookies, it's easy to say, "They'll grow out of it." More likely, they're acquiring bad habits that could lead to childhood obesity and chronic adult diseases, from diabetes and depression to heart trouble and osteoporosis.

But by making simple changes now, you can help your children avoid these problems later. Good Kids, Bad Habits supplies the tools you need, starting with the unique RealAge® Healthy Kids Test. Based on the proven RealAge Test, which measures biological—not calendar—age, the Healthy Kids Test reveals where children are doing fine and where they're headed for health trouble.

Regardless of the problem—from sleeplessness to video-game addiction—Dr. Jen has seen and solved it all, working with parents and kids together. Her insightful tips, preventive steps, and kid smarts, learned from working with thousands of children, make this book invaluable. It will help your kids grow into the healthiest adults they can be—while still allowing them to be kids.

2.0 out of 5 stars What's new, May 9, 2007

This review is from: Good Kids, Bad Habits: The RealAge Guide to Raising Healthy Children (Paperback)
I eagerly ordered Good Kids, Bad Habits, hoping for new insights and parenting tips. The first problem was that my children are 12, 14 & 17 years old, and the book's advice targeted parents with much younger children. Unfortunaltely some of us with teens and preteens have still not figured out how best to shepard our children into the healthest possible lifestyles, given our modern culture.

I read the book anyway, and was struck with the thought that very few of the suggestions presented by the author were new or original. Many of the main stream suggestions have been in parents' magazine articles for decades. The title and cover of the book were the most creative and original part of the package.

The author is a pediatrician, yet little or no science graced the pages.

Of course I was not been able to bring myself to toss the book in the recycle bin. So I have donated the paperback to the local library. A 5 minute scan of the text at the library, should provide you with all its insights.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good one for your parenting book collection, March 6, 2007
This review is from: Good Kids, Bad Habits: The RealAge Guide to Raising Healthy Children (Paperback)
As a mother of 2 1/2 year old twins, I found this book to provide invaluable advice for how to ensure that we parents take steps NOW in order for our children to develop a solid, enduring set of healthy lifestyle habits. What I appreciated most about the book was the Dr. Jen's practical perspective and advice re: small, incremental changes that can be implemented in the near term to help children for the long-term. This book is a great resource for any parent, however new or experienced you are!

What a fantastic book! Useful advice given in a practical and non-judgemental way. Dr. Jen provides a fantastic road map for helping to put your child on the path of a healthy life both physically & mentally. As the Mom of a 9-year old son, I really appreciated her advice on parenting children during the 'tween years and thoughts on self-esteem.
