5.0 out of 5 stars A practical guide to creating a good life, August 3, 2006
This review is from: A Good Life (Paperback)
As the parent of a 32-year-old man with Down syndrome, I'm always on the lookout for good, practical, sensible resources that can guide us as we create a full, interesting life for Jim. This is one of the resources. What we want for our sons and daughters doesn't have to depend on the whims of social services and funding programs; it depends on families regaining control of simple, fundamental questions: what do we want? and what is a good life? It's a simple but profound shift in the way we help our children define themselves in our families, in our communities and the eyes of those systems that see them first and foremost as "disabled." This book, prepared by parents and others knowledgeable about these things, is not only full of good suggestions. It helps guide us step by step as we help our sons and daughters plan and look forward to their future--ultimately, a future without us. This book reminds us with its stories, its practical suggestions, its checklists and things to think about and act upon, that we don't have to be just recipients because we have a family member with a disability. We can be creators.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you are a parent of someone with an intellectual or developmental disability, January 31, 2012
This review is from: A Good Life (Paperback)
This is a must read for parents and care-givers that want to go beyond the "service delivery system"--to imagine and create something better for their loved one with a disability.

I have four dauthers, the youngest is 27 with Down syndrome, and I want for all of them the same thing: a good life.

If you want the same, read this book!
