Book Description

July 19, 2007 2 and up
When Digger, a backhoe construction machine, is dropped off in a vacant lot, a little boy could not be more excited. He watches as Digger and the construction workers work hard and slowly transform the empty lot into a wonderful new community center. Now the boy and his friends can make music, dance, and plant flowers. And what better way to thank Digger than by painting a picture of him on the wall of the new community center!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1–This sunny picture book takes readers through the entire construction process, from vacant lot to community center. Beginning with the early-morning arrival of a backhoe, an enthusiastic young boy describes the various trucks that come to the site and the activities of the workers. When the building is complete, he and his neighbors enjoy all that their new community center has to offer, and even paint a picture of the digger on the wall. Simply told, and with large, clear illustrations, this offering will be fun for storytime or for one-on-one sharing. The text is peppered with sound effects ("Grr-clank!" and "Rumble and rattle"), and the last page has labeled drawings of the vehicles. A great choice for libraries that cannot keep enough construction books on the shelf.– Laurel L. Iakovakis, Douglas County Libraries, Castle Rock, CO

From Booklist

PreS. There can never be enough truck books for some preschoolers, and those who feel that way are sure to love this one--for the sound and rhythm of the words as well as clear, brightly colored pictures of machines in action. As a boy and his mom watch the activity at a building site, the child hears the pounding of the huge machines. Digger goes "Grrr-clank! Grr-clank! Grrr-clank-clank!"; "Flatbed backs and grunts, then backs and grunts some more"; Cement Mixer rumbles and grumbles. The workmen are Digger's helpers, and the pictures show them climbing and clanging, welding and hammering. When all the work is done, there is a new community center for everyone. After a read-aloud, toddlers will want to play out the construction action again and again. Hazel Rochman

5.0 out of 5 stars great book! September 17, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
my son and my daughter made me read this over and over. My daughter started reading to my son. My son pretends to read it. Very simple and easy to "pretend" read with. Pictures go very well with text and great topic for any boy---or girl! I love watching diggers work around town myself!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is my son's favorite book January 12, 2009
By D. Zhao
Format:Paperback
This is not a book I would have naturally gravitated to for my son. It was in a bunch of other books on trucks at the library. He loved it right away and now one year later has still not gotten sick of it. He was thrilled to finally get his own copy for Christmas and I was glad not to have to keep checking it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book For Children! September 2, 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Good Morning, Digger" is a wonderful book for children. My 2 1/2 year old grandson just loves this book.

The only thing I don't like about it is that in the middle of the book, it gets a bit wordy for a young child. They like short sentences. This is a minor issue compared to the fun pictures and story of Good Morning, Digger.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with small children or to grandparents who have the honor and privilege of caring for their little ones during the day.
