Product Description

Good Charlotte is back with their 4th studio album, GOOD MORNING REVIVAL. Returning to work with producer Don Gilmore (Pearl Jam, Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne)-- who helmed Good Charlotte's eponymous 2000 breakthrough debut--was the decisive change that reinvigorated the band. After a pair of successful albums like 2002's tremendously popular triple platinum The Young and the Hopeless and 2004's subsequent million-selling follow-up The Chronicles of Life and Death (which were realized with producer Eric Valentine), GC singer Joel Madden says its modus operandi on GOOD MORNING REVIVAL (Epic/Daylight) was simply to "make a record that we loved and that felt good." The first monster single is "The River" a collaboration with M. Shadows & Synyster Gates.

Their multiple piercings, shaved heads, and abundant tattoos have them labeled a punk band, but on their fourth album, Good Charlotte--led by twin brothers Joel (lead vocals) and Benji (lead guitar) Madden--fall much more under the umbrella of 1970s arena rock and mainstream ballads. There is the occasional foray into the pop-punk mode of previous records, including the distorted-vocal rap "Keep Your Hands Off My Girl" and "Broken Hearts Parade," which sounds like Green Day with horns. It's easy to see the maturation in the Maddens' songwriting on such tracks as "The River," a surveillance of the inner workings of Los Angeles, the grass-is-greener pop song "Something Else," and "Where Would We Be," a break-up ballad about Joel Madden's split with pop princess Hilary Duff. With a piano lead and strident chorus, Madden admits, "Now I must confess that I'm a sinking ship/And I'm anchored by the weight of my heart." Browbeaten in theory, like sister songs "Misery," "Victim of Love," and "Break Her Heart," Good Morning Revival offers hints of optimism that grow with the record and reach the summit with the closing pop song, "March On." The harmonic chorus jubilantly declares, "Like soldiers we can make it through the night/We'll see the sun/March on." Whether punkers or mainstream rockers, it's apparent that Good Charlotte will continue the march. --Scott Holter

I have to laugh at some of the pubescent reviews. Many of them can be summed up as: "I hate it when a band plays music I don't want to hear." Really?!?

Lots of bands shift, evolve and change, often leaving many narrow-minded fans stranded on their limited islands. I'm remembering the grief the Goo Goo Dolls suffered when they did something similar and favored mainstream more than limited crowds.

The Good: Album is polished and well-done. Very approachable. Small glimpse are present of potential, but otherwise never reached. Nice to listen to if you want some pop-punk background while working, but don't have the time to pay attention to lyrics and music.

The Bad: Loss of the edginess and core appeal they had. Lyrics are basically lame. Not blazing any new musical ground, although it is a shift for the band itself.

Similarities: Goo Goo Dolls, The Killers, Coldplay.

In the end, would I buy this again armed with what I know now? No.

I love the new sound & direction GC took with this album. The thing people need to realise is that life isn't all about labels. They never claimed to be punk or anything like that, they are just themselves. Deal with it. They're not going anywhere.

Now onto the album review. Joel's voice sounds amazing on every song & the lyrics are really great. I think this is their best album yet, lyrically & musically. The best songs IMO are Broken Hearts Paradge, The River, Misery, Victims of Love, Where Would We Be Now...they are all really great. So if you want a great record to relate to & dance to...this is for you.

I've read some of the other reviews of the album and I have to confess that I've never listened to any other Good Charlotte albums and that may account for my difference of opinion.

I think the album is very good! There are a couple songs on it that just miss. To me, Something Else and Dance Floor Anthem are rather poor. But I would say 7 tracks are very good. The remaining 4 are ok. My favorite track is Misery, the second track, which emerges out of the weak intro track with a simple, but powerful drum/guitar combination.

If you came to the table expecting big things from the album based on their prior work, it seems like people have generally been disappointed. I listened with some new ears and found myself enjoying most of the album. It'll definitely be one I listen to regularly.

My bottom line? If you've got extra cash to spend, buy it. If cash is a little tight, it's not great enough to pick-up.

This is my favorite from Good Charlotte.I wasn't a real big fan of their first two albums cause they sounded like any other pop-punk band. But I was hooked after I heard Chronicles.(If you want to know I bought the death version cause I liked it's bonus song way better than lifes.)Also on that note I like to say who gives a [...] if they made a song about how rich they were.I mean why did you buy it if you didn't like it.My favorite tracks areThe River,Misery,Something Else, and All black.

Ok, first I will say that I like Good Charlotte overall. I didn't really like the "punk-ish" sound of the first album like everyone else seems to have liked but I will say that I'm a big fan of "The Young and the Hopeless" and "The Chronicles of Life and Death" (esp this one). Anyway, I read a bunch of these reviews the other day because I had been thinking about buying the cd (having not yet heard it) and I noticed that nearly ALL the reviews are bad. SO after reading all of that, I decided to listen to some samples. I did. I liked it. Went home listened to quite a few of the songs on Youtube..still liked it. So I got the cd last night. It's a really good cd!!! They don't sound THAT much different. An artist will change over time, they're supposed to or people get bored with their music. I think that people are giving it bad reviews because either they just plain hate Good Charlotte...or they want the "punkie" sound back or the "darker" sound back. I personally, love the sound of the album Chronicles. Yes, this one is a bit different..its definitely more upbeat and has a new sound to it, but I think it was a nice change. My favorite key tracks are "The River" (SOOO awesome), "Dance Floor Anthem", "Misery", "All Black" and others (haven't gotten real familiar with it yet). So with all that said my point is, if you normally like Good Charlotte and are thinking of buying this CD but are seeing all the bad reviews...Go to Youtube or something and listen to a few of the songs before making your choice. Everyone has a different opinion and it's not fair to let other people try to ruin it for you. Also, I'm NOT one of those young people that are a huge fan and say "OH MY GOD, BUY IT IT'S THE BEST", I am picky with music and wouldn't say its good if it wasn't.Read more ›

I bought "Good Morning Revival" mostly for curiosity's sake. A fan that's grown up from the time of their first two releases, I wasn't buying it for superior music quality over other popular bands of their genre.

"Good Morning Revival" is a fairly decent album, predictable and at times quite "pop-ish" and repetitive, but it doesn't really contain a terrible track, as songs, in my opinion, range from "okay" to "pretty good." The standouts are "The River," a song with surprising spiritual undertones and an infectious chorus, "Where Would We Be Now," a gentle love song with a beautiful piano melody, and "March On," an uplifting conclusion. Gone from this album are the overly angry, angst-filled anthems sometimes associated with the band, evidence they've matured and mellowed since "Young and the Hopeless" and even "Chronicles of Life and Death."

All in all, it's a little too safe a step for a band whose hardcore fan base a few years ago is now probably outgrowing their music. With good single choices, however, it holds potential to attract new fans.

PUNK ROCKERS RISE UP AND STOP THIS WEAK POP CRAP FROM RUINING OUR NAME!
Now he is shouting nonsensical rants. Calm down there buddy. I have the Sex Pistols cd and agree that that is true punk. In saying that, you can't just dismiss every other band that has a twinge of punk influence just because they don't sound or act like the Sex Pistols. Pop punk is a genre in... Read More

Closed minded? Punk rock is one of the most limited genres ever. That's why it died less than 10 years after it emerged. People who make music are "arty", or "artists", which means they like to CREATE. Of course, creations are almost always expansions on old stuff, which... Read More
