give it time,
This review is from: Good Mourning (Audio CD)
when i first got this cd, i already had from here to infirmiry and the hot water music split, so i was familiar with them.
at first i only liked 3 or 4 songs on the album. but now, 2 years later, i love every song and i never skip a track. give this cd time to sink in. i DONT recomend getting this cd first. order of AT albums you should buy if you want to get into them: 1. crimson (its the most appealing to all parties) 2. from here to infirmiry (armaggedon, private eye, and stupid kid were the first songs i liked by them) 3. good mourning (once you have the previously stated 2, you can appreciate and enjoy this album more) 4. self titled (this isnt an album, but it lets you get a feel for their earlier stuff before buying MICF and GD) 5. mayble ill catch fire (this album is totally different from the next albums they would release. this is probably their worst album, but i still love it.) 6. goddamnit (this is a classic. if you learn to like MICF, you'll be obsessed with this one) this is just a recomendation, whatever you decide, you cant go wrong with alkaline trio. back to the album 1.this could be love- 9/10 - your typical alkaline trio formula. dark verse, catchy a bit more happy sounding chorus. this song has some sick lyrics though, consider yourself warned. 2. we've had enough - 9/10 - an instant favorite. upbeat but dark verse, sing-a-long chorus. this song is sort of the anthem of the cd 3. 100 stories - 8/10 - this song is one of those songs that just takes time to like. i LOVE it now, but again, it took me a while to get used to it. this song is sung by Dan, not Matt 4. continental - 10/10 - this could easily be my favorite song on the album. beautiful guitar parts, genius melodies yet so simple. 5. all on black - 10/10 - this is another stand-out track on the album and one you will like almost immediately. dark verse, dark chorus, very satanic lyrics. this song probably has the most genius bridge ive ever heard in my life 6. emma - 8/10 - this is a song i just recently started liking, i dont understand why i skipped over it at first. the chorus is awesome. sung by dan 7. fatally yours - 7/10 - this is another song i just recently started liking. this song has more punk roots and shows a bit more of alkaline trio's old stuff. i love this song, i just gave it a 7 because i know it was my least favorite song on the album at first. 8. every thug needs a lady - 8/10 - this is another song sung by Dan. this was one of my favorite songs when i first bought the album. this one is a bit more melodic and radio friendly 9. blue carolina - 7/10 - another sung by Dan. this song is overrated. it is a good song, but there are so many claims that this is the greatest alkaline trio song ever. far from the truth. this one is a pretty average track 10. donnes party (all night) - 7/10 - this song is good, but nothing compared to the other material this cd has to offer. nothing special 11. if we never go inside - 8/10 - better than the last couple songs but still not the best song on the cd. this one is a bit more happy sounding especially on the chorus. sung by Dan. 12. blue in the face - 9/10 - this song is acoustic. i love this song so much now, but i didnt think it was that great at first. the last verse at the end of the song is one of my favorite parts of the album. its a perfect way to end the cd

Dark and/or Spooky Pop-Punk,
By
This review is from: Good Mourning (Audio CD)
If Blink 182 and the original Misfits had a baby Alkaline Trio would be it. Imagine, if you will, catchy pop-punk tunes with dark overtones featuring lyrics covering subject matter such as murder, vampires, werewolves, cannibalism, pyromania, and bizarre love stories. This is a good starting place if you're wanting to hear Alkaline Trio for the first time. My only complaint about this album is the bass player's songs which are all kind of fluffy love songs that really don't fit the mood of the album worth a damn. Aside from that though, this is a great solid album from a band that deserves some recognition.Key Songs: This Could Be Love, We've Had Enough, All On Black, Blue In the Face

A tad more polished but still great...,

Although Good Mourning is a little more 'produced' than their older albums it is still great none the less. I find it very consistent the whole way through with each song being as good as the next. It has some faster songs and a slow one at the end and the rest are still energetic and fun. I still think that some of their lyrics are beautiful, such as in All On Black and Fatally yours. If your a fan of their older music you might find it a tad too polished but I still found it very enjoyable and punk, and it's one of my fav albums.

A different, more produced Alkaline trio,

To all Alkaline Trio fans, this is a different record. Unlike the previous records (here to the infirmary, maybe ill catch fire, alkaline trio etc...) this cd was release on a huge record label, Vagrant, while the others were all released on Asian Man (kung-fu records) This cd is extremely produced in comparaison to other A3's music. It is also less bass driven, which isnt good. Daniel and Matt do an awesome job switching off singing the songs. Its an awesome catchy cd if you liked the older stuff. i love this band- i saw them live...buy this cd!

Alkaline Trio has matured.. and I like it.,

I've been a fan for a while and have all their CDs and enjoy every single one of them. I've seen them live four times. And guess what? I love this album too. I won't give any of you the cliched phrase, "their older stuff is better," because I'm sure a lot of people have already said that. (not to mention it is not true) When you get use to older CDs they grow on you and become a part of you. So it's hard not to accept newer albums from bands because eventually, like all bands, they mature. This CD far passed my expectations. The standout songs in my opinion are: Blue Carolina, Continental, Every Thug Needs a Lady and All On Black. What I really like on this CD is the split between Dan and Matt. Dan is really underated, his songs I love just as much as Matt's. My favorite song from this album is Blue Carolina and is my favorite Dan song. To sum things up if you like Alkaline Trio from the past, you shouldn't find a hard time enjoying this CD. If you are new to this band, the only advice I can give you is to buy all their albums. Because every single one is well written, well performed albums and they are definitly my favorite band in the past four years.

Good, but nearly identical to earlier works,
This review is from: Good Mourning (Audio CD)
I am a big Alkaline Trio fan. I was really looking forward to this album, especially since from what I'd read, this album was going to have a slightly different sound from previous albums. I purposefully didn't listen to any songs from it before getting the CD home ... I was extra pumped since the guy at the store told me how awesome he thinks it is as he sold it to me.So I guess with high expectations like that I was bound to be let down eh? :) This is definitely a good album. There's nothing really wrong with it, it just sounds exactly like their previous albums. There are several good songs, like "Fatally Yours", "Emma", and the first single "We've Had Enough". However (and it almost pains me to say this) if you already own Maybe I'll Catch Fire and From Here to Infirmary you might just want to stick with those unless you're a really big Alkaline fan. If you don't own those albums, get them first, they're better. Also, I gotta comment on Matt Skiba's vocal tracks on this album. His voice sounds extra scratchy, I don't know if he was having voice troubles or what, but his voice just sounds bad to me at many points, particularly on the last track "Blue in the Face". It's a good song but the scratchyness of his voice ruins it for me. Sorry Matt! Bottom line: It's good. Just don't expect any surprises at all.

If you liked their last you'll like this one,

If you enjoyed Alkaline Trio's last album, "From here to Infirmary", then you should enjoy their latest release. Most of the songs have a very similar and familiar sound to them. However, if you only like Alkaline Trio's first albums and didn't enjoy their last one then you probably won't enjoy this one either.
Alkaline Trio play great punk tunes, some faster some slower, that are very catchy. Their lyrics are always on the darker side as death and pain are popular lyrical material. One thing that sets Alkaline Trio apart from other punk bands are their great vocals. Good Mourning puts together quality tracks from start to finish with no filler in between. Some of my favourite tracks inlude: This Could Be Love All on Black Fatally Yours Blue in the Face I've found this purchase to be well worth the money.

This record makes you happy to be sad.,

My first try with this band of emo-poppunkers other than hearing a couple of comp tracks here and there and I'll admit that although this sounds very slick and polished it's damn hard not to toe-tap and hum along once you pop this disc in. There is definitely a morbid sense of humor here and a higher than normal fascination with the macabre and you would think that would lead to a doomy gloomy and mopey record. Not if your main songwriter is Matt Skiba. He can sing about self mutilation, drug use and the various other downer topics on this record and still make you want to dance along. Another thing this band has going for them is that the bass player also writes and sings too making for an even more varied approach in the songs. If it says anything about this record and for what it's worth, I've already ordered 3 of their other discs.

Good stuff, but nothing ground breaking,
By "hajtwin" (Berkeley, CA USA) - See all my reviews

The latest album by Alkaline Trio is definitely a solid effort: songs are catchy, fun and the lyrics are dark/funny/interesting as all other Alk 3 stuff. The album starts off really nicely with "This Could Be Love" and the energy is carried throughout the entire album. Fans who are looking for something new would be disappointed--since they haven't really explored into any new grounds with this album here, with the exception of the ending track, Blue in the face, which is an acoustic track that has some really really good lyrics. The bottom line is--this album is a great buy for people who have always been fans of Alk 3..however, the songs are fairly typical and might sound a little bit boring after repeated listens. Nevertheless, I recommend this album to everyone.

Who couldn't have guessed it? I sure could. Good Mourning is the next logical step for Alkaline Trio. This is both good and bad if you ask me. The downside is that a return to the days of Goddamnit! and their early eps seems more and more unlikely. Also, I sure hope this trend doesn't lead to anything more poppy coming out than certain songs on Good Mourning, namely some of Dan's tracks (ahem "One Hundred Stories"). And I also agree that it seems the Trio "messed up" their track order, putting "This Could Be Love" to open up the cd, while the much much more energetic "We've Had Enough" comes second.I'll admit it, I haven't had this cd for longer than 24 hours, but being a Trio fan for close to 5 years now, I know my stuff. And once you sit down and listen to the cd, the good becomes quite apparent. First and foremost the lyrics. My God, how I love the way Matt and Dan have the ability to take the most upbeat, optimistic gent, whisper a few words into his ear, and soon enough see him hanging from his own self-knotted rope. That's what makes an Alkaline Trio cd head and shoulders above other bands in their genre: the lyrics. And the lyrics on Good Mourning are no different. It seems though that Matt Skiba is slowly delving deeper into madness while Dan is finding his way out. This results in a somewhat unusual, conflicting atmosphere at times, going from a song of heartfelt love to a song of straight-up suicide. Overall, there are certain tracks on here that even on the first listen, hit a hidden note somewhere inside of me, a note usually reserved for the best songs by my favorite bands, Alkaline Trio being one of them. Songs such as "We've Had Enough", "Continental", "Fatally Yours", "Blue Carolina", "Blue In the Face", and possibly my favorite track on the cd, "All On Black", will have Alkaline Trio fans screaming with glee and others pondering what the heck they have been doing throughout their lives without Alkaline Trio. So does this cd deserve a 5? Definately. Although I still don't understand what the heck is up with "One Hundred Stories" and "Every Thug Needs A Lady", both Dan songs, it's probably better this way because I'm sure it wouldn't be mentally healthy for someone to go through an entire dark Matt Skiba record without periodic breaks coming in the form of upbeat poppy revival goodness. This brings us to an important point: there is no such thing as a bad Alkaline Trio song. Each one serves its own purpose, and I'm happy to say that Good Mourning adds its own share of songs containing a dark, destinctive nature. Word of caution though: if this is your first Trio cd, don't get this, go pick up Goddamnit! followed by From Here to Infirmary and then either their singles cd or Maybe I'll Catch Fire. That will allow you to appreciate the depth of what Good Mourning brings. |
