Good news for GOOD NEWS fans, April 6, 2010

Rhino has done their usual superlative work on restoring these 60+ year old recordings for a definitive CD release of the soundtrack from the M-g-M picture GOOD NEWS.
There is far more music here than on the original soundtrack album but the producers have arranged the songs to be complete numbers by themselves, so they do not sound like clipped out segments of the film soundtrack. In the case of "The French lesson" the use the original M-g-M Soundtrack album version which has dialogue to set up the situation. This dialogue is not heard in the film but it works very well on records. This song, by the way, was written by Roger Edens, Betty Comden and Adolph Green especially for the film. Another song they wrote ("An Easier Way") was filmed but cut before the film's release. Rhino includes the song here along with other out-takes. Most of the core songs from the 1927 Broadway show are kept: "Good News"; "He's a Ladies Man" (with a slight adjustment to the lyrics); "Just Imagine"; "Lucky in Love" and the two biggest hits: "The Best Things in Life Are Free" and "The Varsity Drag."
The sound is generally better than the previous CD reissues of the old soundtrack discs, though it still shows its age here and there. A bonus track contains an interview with June Allyson (that is very obviously scripted) and two soundtrack excerpts from the 1930 film version (which still exists except for the last reel!) M-g-M's film version is better even if it isn't authentic. This soundtrack album is thoroughly enjoyable.
