5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely easy to read
The Good News Bible is probably the best version to read in order to grasp the basic meaning of biblical passages. It is easy to read, but does not come across as undignified and overly colloquial. This edition includes the complete Roman Catholic canon and other books not considered inspired (1 and 2 Esdras and the Prayer of Manasseh). It also contains essays on...

3.0 out of 5 stars A very dynamic translation
This is my first English Bible and was purchased for high school Religious studies, far from any in-depth Bible or theological study. For this purpose I can say it is quite adequate in that it presents the Scripture in an extremely easy to read manner.

I have to applaud this work for the way in which it makes the Bible accessible to most. However, if this is...

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely easy to read, March 11, 2000
This review is from: Good News Bible: Good News With Deuterocanonicals/Apocrypha Today's English Version for Catholics 2nd Edition (Hardcover)
It also contains essays on such topics as Biblical history, literature, and important themes. However, these essays are the same ones present in many editions of the New American Bible. There are also boxes in the biblical text relating to certain themes (e.g. the Dead Sea, the Jewish Calendar, etc.) that contain additional notes. This is not, however, a study bible in the true sense, but there are a variety study aids. Overall, this is a great addition to a Christian's biblical library.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the best Bibles I've ever owned, August 10, 1999

This review is from: Good News Bible: Good News With Deuterocanonicals/Apocrypha Today's English Version for Catholics 2nd Edition (Hardcover)
The TEV is one of the easier reading versions available. It is also very accurate considering its ease of use. This is definitely the only Bible I'll ever own. I use to be big NIV and NAS guy, until I discovered this version.

I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible in easy to read modern English., February 5, 2005

This Bible was very easy to understand. The words are at a 6th grade level. 15 books of the Apocrypha are included. This translation version is approved by Catholics. So if you are Catholic and want a modern easy to read version then get the Good News Bible with Apocrypha/Deutrocanonicals 2nd edition in today's english version. I find the King James version hard to understand because it uses obselete english.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very dynamic translation, December 20, 2005
This review is from: Good News Bible: Good News With Deuterocanonicals/Apocrypha Today's English Version for Catholics 2nd Edition (Hardcover)

However, if this is to be the only translation you will own or you have a tendency toward any kind of Bible study you will soon find yourself wanting of a more literal modern translation.

This translation sacrifices some deeper meaning to be found in meditations of Scripture for accessibility to the basic meaning of the text. The liberal use of dynamic equivalence in the translation (borders on paraphrase) may improve clarity of *reading* for some readers, though the clarity of *interpretation* will likely suffer.

For a balance between the above-mentioned factors I would recommend the Revised Standard Version (RSV) - Catholic Edition by Ignatius Press.

I rate this translation 3 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and Accurate Bible Version!, January 4, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Good News Bible: Good News With Deuterocanonicals/Apocrypha Today's English Version for Catholics 2nd Edition (Hardcover)
The TEV is a great version. Whenever I find another version wordy or hard to grasp I always go to the TEV to clear it up. This edition is especially useful b/c it is a nice hardbound copy, it has the apocrypha and deuterocanonicals for those who wish to study more in depth, and it has nice essays and book intros. Overall a VERY nice and inexpenisve package.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good version, September 10, 2003
This review is from: Good News Bible: Good News With Deuterocanonicals/Apocrypha Today's English Version for Catholics 2nd Edition (Hardcover)
I think I'd have to agree with another reviewer that this Bible version is better than the NIV(New International Version). I really like its style and it seems rather faithful to the texts if you compare it to the King James Version. I use this and the King James in my Bible devotional time.
