If you are reading this, you probably already know that the Bible is a wonderful book that can be misused. You probably also know that some churches see the Bible as something to be strictly and literally interpreted, while other churches see it as more of a guide. But it is NOT my intention in this review to touch on these issues. Most priests and nuns consider this a good version of the Bible. In his "Responses to 101 Questions on the Bible," Father Raymond E. Brown refers to the "Good News" as: "...a highly intelligible version." According to my priest, this version of the Bible was really popular in the 70s. The language is straight forward and easy to read. In addition, this particular version is GREAT for beginners. The reason is that (1), there is an introduction to each book giving the reader a brief rundown of the intentions of the individual books. (2), the passages are broken up with titles giving a brief indication of the important topic of the passage. (3.) While the content is to some extent simplified, the essence and beauty is NOT lost. (Unlike the poorly written and lifeless N.I.V.) Whether your church sees the Bible as something to be strictly and literally interpreted or it just sees it as a useful guide, the "Good News" version is a great version to have. While the version I use the most myself is the original "Revised Standard," I will always have a love for the beautifully written "Good News."

OK, you might point to a verse here and there that you possibly preffered translated another way. But overall, considering the level of english, it is an outstanding version.
It is simple english, straightforward and direct. it is a translation, and not a simple paraphrase like the CEV.

I recommend this book for those who are trying to read the Word of the Living Lord God but do not have an established command of the English language. If the JKV or NIV becomes a little to complex, then this is a good book to settle into. Not to mention it's just good to have a couple of these to have on hand to hand out to young readers and those with reading difficulty . . . because overall reading the Word is good . .
