4.0 out of 5 stars Easily understood version in a compact package.
The Good News Bible, second edition, is an easily understood account of the life and times of Jesus and his followers. One cannot say more than that. This is a great gift for young and old. Maybe you are just looking for an alternate version to supplement your bible study - this is the bible for you. In addition, this paperback edition is compact and very portable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good translation, September 9, 2003
This review is from: Good News Bible: Today's English Version (Paperback)
I think this Bible version is better than the NIV (New International Version). It also seems to be fairly accurate even along with the King James Version. I disagree with some of the reviewers who gave this version only one star and criticism. The King James is far from perfect as well. I use both the Good News Bible and the King James in my Bible devotional time. Translation is a difficult task (I know, I've studied languages in college). So any work that is an attempt to help bring the Gospel to someone deserves at least some credit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Bible Translation, May 11, 2000
This review is from: Good News Bible: Today's English Version (Paperback)
The wonderful thing about this excellent translation is that both adults and children will easily understand the plan of God for their lives. Even people for whom the english language is something they are in the process of learning will benefit greatly from using this translation.

Reading this book can save your life from an eternity apart from God.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Translation Ever, May 5, 2009
This review is from: Good News Bible: Today's English Version (Paperback)
This is the best translation I have ever read. First of all it is so pragmatice and easy to understand. It clears all the confusions that people, over the years, have expressed in terms of "understanding the Bible." Now, our Father, GOD who has no beginning and no ending, yet, HE is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the Ending, HE is very complex. Yet, His instructions to us are very simple.(Read Is.55:8-9, 1 Cor 1:19, 1 Cor 3:19&20, Math 11:30, Ps 119:138, Ps 119:130, Ecl.7:29b)
Let us all get His Word in us and not allow ourselves to get bugged-down or trapped over Bible translations.
Remain blessed!Good News Bible: Today's English Version

1.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, but not worth reading, July 26, 2000
This review is from: Good News Bible: Today's English Version (Paperback)
The claim to fame for Today's English Version (TEV), previously known as the Good News Bible, is that it was the first dynamic-equivalence translation. Its editors did not try translating what was literally written; they instead tried translating meaning. Translating dynamically is a tricky art. Here the TEV translators only partly succeeded, tending at times toward commentary. The TEV's over-paraphrastic wording, although making the text readable, often added inaccuracies to Bible passages.

Translators of the TEV aimed for a standard English style on a common-language level. It was to be neither too simplistic nor too academic--in other words, common everyday language. To reach this goal, the translators and editors jettisoned some theological and religious jargon. However, reducing the use of traditional wording also reduced the TEV to bland, basic prose short on poetry and majesty. Linguistically, this made the TEV a translation for those unfamiliar with religious jargon. However, because of its many inaccuracies, it is not a good study Bible. The second edition of the TEV (TEV2) restricted revisions mainly to two areas. First, to reduce the use of male-gender language that applied to both sexes. Second, to correct translations that were stylistically or exegetically poor. They did not fully succeed. In gender-neutral language the translators paraphrased too much, neutering some passages that refer specifically to males. In accuracy, Today' English Version is aoubt as bad as it gets!

In the TEV2 1 John 3:17 reads:

If we are rich and see others in need, yet close our hearts against them, how can we claim that we love God? (TEV2)

TEV2 receives an D in accuracy and an A- in readability.

1.0 out of 5 stars Read the KJV please., June 9, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Good News Bible: Today's English Version (Paperback)
This bible is not the true GOD'S Word. It has been changed too much. I believe that the KJV is the true Bible. God died for our sins. He shed his blood so that we might have everlasting life - but, ONLY if we belive. This bible is written to make you feel good about yourself. All we are sinners destined for hell and damnation. God was not brought into this world just to make us feel good about ourselves but to make us feel a need to repent from our sin. We cannot get to heaven in eternity unless we believe in the LORD JESUS CHRIST.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly developed plot, some sickening scenes of violence., May 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Good News Bible: Today's English Version (Paperback)
Overall, this book was very troubling. I find it bizarre that this book remains perennially popular when the stories it tells of violence, perversion, and a deeply spiteful god are so repugnant.

I find it difficult to believe that so many people can expose their children to this kind of sickness. To make matters worse, many of these people regularly assemble in a meeting hall to discuss the book at length - all the while exposing the children whose psychological health they ought to protect to a depiction of one of the most grotesque scenes of human suffering in all of literature - a crucifix.

I would recommend this book only to *adults* who are interested in a more or less unabashed study of depravity, poorly imagined moral philosophy, and complete contempt for rational human beings.

This book has caused more misery than all the wars ever. Anybody who believes in it deserves to burn eternally in the hell they have created with their metaphysical mumbo-jumbo
