Wake up, Enablers!,
By C. Jones (Bowdon, GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Good News for the Chemically Dependent: And Those Who Love Them (Paperback)
If you ready to make a difference in your family AND help the one who is chemically dependent, read this book. Whether you are the one who is chemically dependent or a family member who has participated in this life-style with the addict, this book tells you exactly what it is going to take to get the addict and the family back to functioning as normal as possible. The author includes Christianity as a helping tool but understands that the church is not exclusive to this healing process. Sometimes your pastor and church family doesn't understand enough about the addiction disease to help families and that's okay too as long as you seek professional help AND look to your Christian support. If you want honesty and are committed to becoming a healthy person/family again, this is the book that can make the difference.

This books is very practical. It explains the origin of substance abuse in a person's life and its effects--which are not only on the individual but also their family. This has helped me immensely with my chemically dependent sister.

This book "Good News for the Chemically Dependent" is for those who are trying to help people who are trapped in Drug addiction or Alcohol addiction or any addiction for that matter. Because of this book I've discovered that all addictions are contrary to what God has in store for us. The book gives sound advice and has set up a model to help people be cured from addictions of all sorts. Read it! There is one caveat, you must believe in God and develop a relationship with Him for it to work.

I read this on the recommendation of someone who had heard the author speak at his church. I have a sister whose son, age 30, has abused alcohol since he was a teen-ager. His drunkeness and rebellion have caused turmoil and embarrasement for the whole family. I recommended it to my sister thinking this may help her grieving for son to turn his life around. It is not a "how to" book but a "Here is what chemical dependency is. Co-dependents need to deal with it head on." If you don't deal with it head on it will harm everyone envolved. The biblical world-view of the author offers hope for the dependent but leaves the responsibility squarely on his own shoulders. Co-dependents are encouraged to demonstrate "tough love" and not cover up the problem for the good of all concerned. It is well written and has some diagrams that are helpful.

Jeff has a uniquely approachable and personable style dealing with an extremely painful subject. He makes the frightening landscape of addiction understandable in everyday terms and guides the reader to assurance of their next step. He also appears on the TV show "Intervention".
This is a fantastic first book to read if you or a loved one suffer from addiction and you want things to change.

Holly divorced Jeff some years ago.
The book serves a portion of the market but I don't think it is quite up to a couple of the reviewers' claims. |
