The most moving collection of true Christmas songs ever!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Good News (Audio CD)
One Sunday morning I woke to "Mary, Did You Know," and immediately began to search for this album. The chills generated by the line, "Mary did you know when you kissed your little baby then you kissed the face of God" are still there everytime I listen to it. I didn't realize what a wonderful voice Kathy Mattea had until exposed to this music. The selection of songs is superb, most of which I had never heard. Every family should have a copy, it might help them appreciate more the most perfect gift God gave to the world, and the gift of music and talented artists such as are embodied in this presentation. It will certainly be on my gift list for family and friends.

My favorite Christmas Album,
By A Customer
This review is from: Good News (Audio Cassette)
I bought this CD after hearing Kathy Mattea sing "Mary Did You Know" on a Whitehouse Christmas Celebration on television. I could not forget the song so I tracked down the album and was thrilled with it. Every song on the album is wonderful. I can listen to it year round. The songs have so much meaning and really touch my heart. I would recommend this album for Kathy Mattea fans and for anyone who loves Christian Christmas music.

Good News Indeed!,

Kathy Mattea's 1993 Christmas album is an amazing piece of work. Unlike most Christmas albums with a mix of old and new songs, Good News has a theme which it follows throughout. There is nothing cute or cuddly about this album, but don't let that scare you away because it's one of the best modern albums of its kind around. Each song on the album illustrates the impact Christ's life has made in the world, and it is indeed, good news! From "What A Wonderful Beginning" to the title track, "Good News," the music, lyrics, and arrangements are exemplary. Mattea, known best as a country music singer, proves she's an artist of great depth with this project. Good News deserves to part of your Christmas music collection.

My three small children and I love this album. To my children these songs will be as important as "White Christmas" and "Jingle Bells" were to me. Thank you Kathy for beautiful music that includes the real message of Christmas. My childrens favorite is "Mary Did You Know".

Christmas music at its best!!,

I first heard songs from this album on Kathie Lee Gifford's Christmas special several years ago. I immediately bought the album. It's the first CD we unpack each Christmas. Ms. Mattea's vocals, the simple, lovely musical accompaniment, and above all the WORDS to these songs will MOVE you to celebrate the true WONDER and JOY of Christmas. Christ Child's Lullabye, Good News, Emmanuel, Nothing But a Child and Mary Did You Know are unforgettable. No other album has as MANY wonderful songs for this blessed season! Share it with everyone you know!

My All-time Favorite Christmas Album,
By "roisin_dubh" (Everett WA USA) - See all my reviews

I love this album. It's not only my favorite Christmas album, but one of my favorite albums, period. I'm a fan of Ms. Mattea, anyway, so I bought this when it was first released. There are many other versions of "Mary, Did You Know?" but this one is so moving that, after countless listenings, it still makes me cry with its lovely warmth. Two of my other favorites on this CD are the old folk hymn "Brightest and Best," which Ms. Mattea delivers with simple beauty, and the equally gorgeous "Emmanuel." "Somebody Talkin' "Bout Jesus" is a fine song with a gospel feel. This is an album I have recommended to many friends, even those who normally dislike "country" music, and especially people who are dismayed by the commercialization of the holidays. This is simple, homey music that celebrates Christmas in moving, honest emotion. If you've heard "Jingle Bells" and "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" just one too many times this season, give this album a try.

A Must Christmas CD for Your Collection,

It's hard to believe that it's been seven years since Kathy released this wonderful Christmas collection. But it still stands as one of the most spiritually uplifting and joyful CD's of Christmas ever recorded.Kathy veers away from the unexpected and focuses on the birth of Jesus as the essence of the CD. Kathy was one of the first to record both "There's a New Kid in Town" (not Billy Gilman, as many reviewers supposed), and the evocative and touching "Mary Did You Know." Her delivery as always is impeccable and heartfelt. Kathy never resorts to screaming high notes or doing vocal acrobatics that say "Hey listen to me, I can hit a High C." Kathy uses her voice as the instrument God gave her to bring such joy to her listeners. My favorite song on this CD is "Good News," which is simply beautiful. A must addition to any serious music lover's Christmas collection. God Bless You, Kathy.

My favorite Christmas CD of all time!,

I have never been so moved. I bought this about five years ago after attending a Mattea concert. (We never miss her shows) We heard her sing "Mary Did You Know" and I was in tears. We bought it the next day. This is one of my favorite Christmas gifts, as well. Finally a Christmas album by a popular artist that is original and void of the usual "jingle bell rock" and others that so many other artists seem determined to add to their albums. If you love her music, by all mines buy "The Innocent Years" because we think it's her best album to date. Beautiful music, and her voice just keeps getting better!

The CD for the Reason for the season,

No fluffy Christmas covers here. Until I purchased this CD, as a gift for my parents, I never realized how fantastic a singer Kathy Mattea is. So, now I have the CD for myself too.The arrangements on this album are fabulous, the songs wonderful and you can tell by the way she sings the songs that Ms. Mattea is an extremely spiritual person. If you believe that Jesus is the reason for the season, do yourself a favor, buy this CD. "Mary, Did You Know" is my favorite track and explains everything. Merry Christmas!!!!! |
