4.0 out of 5 stars A Christian version of Goodnight, Moon
Good Night God, written by Holly Bea, reminds me of the classic children's nighttime book, Good Night, Moon. The only real difference between the two is that Good Night God has a religious slant to it.

In the book, which is written in verse, a young boy ends his day by saying good night to the things around him. He starts off by saying, "Good night, God, the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Book Worm Mother
Was disappointed with this book. There wasn't much story, just Good night this and good night that. If you are looking for a QUICK read to put you child to bed this will fit the bill. But if your child likes more of a story before bed, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. I have some of the other books from this author and have enjoyed them, but this book fell short of my...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Christian version of Goodnight, Moon, January 19, 2009
This review is from: Good Night God (Hardcover)
Good Night God, written by Holly Bea, reminds me of the classic children's nighttime book, Good Night, Moon. The only real difference between the two is that Good Night God has a religious slant to it.

In the book, which is written in verse, a young boy ends his day by saying good night to the things around him. He starts off by saying, "Good night, God, the day is done. Good night, birds. Good night, sun." He says good night to the sky, and the trees, and the squirrels and other things in his world. The words "Good night, God," are sprinkled throughout the text, as well as at the end of the book.

The illustrations, done by Kim Howard, are also reminiscent of Good Night, Moon, with the bright, bold primary colors. But Good Night God includes drawings of a young boy interacting with his world, rather than just illustrations of inanimate objects.

What I Like: I like having this religious alternative for a goodnight book. It's a great way to introduce young children to the idea of bedtime devotions.

What I Dislike: I debated with myself as to whether or not to mention the one thing I don't like about this book. But, again, I chose to tell you. On the next-to-the-last page it says: "But now it's time to sleep and dream of rocket ships and fairy queens." Because this is a book where a child is saying "Good night" to God and mostly to the things God made (like the sky, and the trees, and the squirrels), I think it would have been more appropriate for the child to dream of something other than "fairy queens," which, of course, are fantasy creatures. Just a thought.

We needed another good night book for my son's bedtime routine and I really wanted one focused on God. I got this one for his birthday, and he loves it. He loves books in general, but some he will have nothing to do with. Not this one. The pictures are beautiful and the story is even sweeter. Great choice for going to bed!

Leaves of fire, skies of blue with puffy great clouds framing a fine Fall sunset, a little boy plays & sings his goodnights to all he sees around him with simple reverence & that glorious childhood confidence. With Kim Howard's vivid, immediate & colorful illustrations, Holly Bea sets a lovely teaching bedtime story before us. I recommend Good Night God for anyone with the wonder of a child for this bright & lovely time of year & the desire to thank God for the love of life. Grandparents, aunts & uncles - this one is a must on your Gift Lists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Beautiful Meeting Of Words And Pictures!, October 24, 2000

Holly Bea and Kim Howard have done it again! This book is a lovely, reassuring "good night" book for all young children, with words they can soon read themselves, charming paintings of familiar scenes, and a message of love that embraces all religious and spiritual beliefs. My 3 and 5 year old children have added this to their "most requested" list (next to "Where Does God Live?" and "My Spiritual Alphabet Book" and "Matzoh Ball Soup")--and we enjoy it each time we "have to" read it again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Good Night, January 26, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Good Night God (Hardcover)
I love this book, but what is more important, my 2-year old loves it too! Even at 18 months, he would snuggle in my arms in his darkened bedroom just before bedtime, and I would recite this simple yet lovely rhyme to him from memory. He would ask me for "God" when he wanted to hear the story. Now he thinks he's too old to get cuddled before bed, but he wants to hold my hand and asks me to recite "God." This book is a blessing, and a great way to wind down the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Religious "Goodnight Moon", December 27, 2004
This review is from: Good Night God (Hardcover)
This delightful accessible storybook for toddlers is similar to "Goodnight Moon" (which all little ones adore) except it has a religious slant. A little boy goes through his evening routine and says goodnight to all the animals in the park, etc. and ends by saying goodnight to God. The text is in verse form which little ones find appealing and which enhances their vocabulary and word skills. I bought this for our Lutheran church library and I know the little kids will love it. Lovely brilliant illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars The New Bedtime Classic, June 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Good Night God (Hardcover)
After receiving My Spiritual Alphabet Book as a gift, I quickly ordered all of Holly Bea's books. I love reading Good Night, God to my son. Even at 10 months he is enamored with the illustrations and rhythmic pace of Bea's writing. I titled this review as The New Bedtime Classic due to its refreshing take on Good Night Moon. The expressive illustrations provide several opportunities for parent and child to interact, question and make up new stories. This book is at the top of the stack at our house!

I love this book as much as my ...daughter. We have been reading it to her since she was a week old. If we try to read another book she wiggles around until we read this one. The art work is beautiful and the rhythm of the story is soothing. It is completely wonderful. We're going to have to buy another one because, like the Velveteen Rabbit, this book has had it's "fur loved off"!

Was disappointed with this book. There wasn't much story, just Good night this and good night that. If you are looking for a QUICK read to put you child to bed this will fit the bill. But if your child likes more of a story before bed, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. I have some of the other books from this author and have enjoyed them, but this book fell short of my expectations. In the book you follow a small child saying Good Night to various toys and things the child did during the day, and then ending with Good Night God. But there is no story, just Good Night. Hope this review has helped you.
