Title: Good People Everywhere
Author: Lynea Gillen
Illustrator: Kristina Swarner
Publisher: Three Pebble Press
ISBN: 978-0-9799289-8-7

With so many situations in the world being rushed, stressful and sometimes depressive, it is nice to see a child reading something happy, positive and uplifting in today's society. In Lynea Gillen's children's book Good People Everywhere, that goal is accomplished and encouraged to young children.

This thirty two page, nine inch by nine inch glossy hard bound book has an artistic picture of many types of colorful houses among green trees on the front cover that spills on to the back cover and includes two paragraphs about the book along with a short review. In addition to the short story, there are hand-painted pictures on almost every page along with two do-it-yourself crafts at the back of the book. At the closing, there is a page dedicated to the author and illustrator, complete with photographs of each. There were no typographical or grammatical errors noticed and the book can be easily read to and understood by a three year old child or above.

This book is about people being good. Be it the farmer who plants and waters our food to those that pick it and the grocer that sells it or the people that build our houses or deliver our babies and take care of others, people are good. There is no negativity, dramatic or scary discussions or questionable topics. Gillen mentions the parent who cooks for their children or the chef who feeds the poor and needy to the young teen helping a sad boy on a playground or the first grader helping a friend who got hurt. She reiterates that all people try to be good.

This book is so happy and encouraging. It stresses the good in people everywhere. In a culture and a world where people are quick to criticize and bring people down, this book is utterly refreshing. It is a great bedtime book for your kiddos, and it is an amazing uplifting book whenever you just need a lift.

What do children see when they watch the news? They learn about bad deeds by people who shoot others in a crowded theater or a public school. It could almost make them wonder if there are any good people left! Yet, we know that there are many good people like carpenters who build the houses in which we live, farmers who grow and cooks who make the food we eat, doctors and midwives who deliver babies, teachers, musicians, and millions and millions of others who help us in various ways by doing very good things, including our moms, dads, sisters, and brothers. What good things can you and I do to help someone else?

It is important for children to be reminded that there are still caring people in their world. Author Lynea Gillen, who was a school teacher and counselor for over thirty years and is now in private practice, tells a gentle, soothing story, illustrated with warm, full-color images by Kristina Swarner, that will help to ease youngsters' fears and develop a sense of gratitude. In the back there are two bonus activities that teachers, parents, counselors, and therapists can use to reinforce and extend the learning into daily life by giving children an opportunity to practice the skills that will enable them to grow into thankful and giving people. Good People Everywhere will encourage children to recognize the good people in their lives and would make an excellent bedtime story.

Gratitude for the good that surrounds is too often overshadowed by random acts of violence. Good People Everywhere reminds us all, not just children, that the acts of kindness that permeate our world far outweigh the evil and that we are all capable of being one of the good people. I use this book as an outline for a children's yoga class focusing on gratitude and the children love it. The illustrations are perfect for the text and the text is almost a poem.

Author, Lynea Gillen knows that young children are very impressionable. Lynea's thirty years as an educator and counselor are the spine of her first children's book, GOOD PEOPLE EVERYWHERE. Simply and perfectly stated, Lynea uses her masterful writing skills to touch the readers hearts reminding them "goodness" exists everywhere in our daily lives. Kristina Swarner's soft and colorful illustrations sew the author's voice and text to them creating a satisfying child-friendly book that is sure to become a favorite read aloud at home or in a classroom. Written for children 3 and up, GOOD PEOPLE EVERYWHERE is a much needed and subtle reminder to be mindful on how to look at the world and sharing that message with our children. As a counselor and educator, I highly recommend this book!

This book is fairly simple but has great, colorful pictures and an upbeat message. My son likes the pictures of the people repairing buildings, growing food and a person driving a delivery truck. It shows some of the ways people are able to be of service, help others, and share their talents in different settings all around the world.
