3.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read
"Good Peoples" by Marcus Majors is an alright book. It's the story of a man who's looking for a perfect woman. The main character Myles has sworn off dating until he find's the perfect woman. He meets Marissa who he feels is perfect but in reality she is only human. Overall I like the book but there were a couple of things that I wished Mr. Majors had gone...

"Good Peoples" by Marcus Major is an impressive debut. The story includes all the ingredients of a great read: romance, humor, insight, vivid and memorable characters, and strong writing. The main character Myles is a schoolteacher who's been unlucky in love; that is, until he meets the sultry Marisa who promptly knocks him off his feet. You will enjoy how the writer develops the relationship between Myles and Marisa, the ups and downs of their relationship, and you'll be trembling near the end as you wait to see if their love can withstand certain issues. There's some laugh out loud scenes in the book, some endearing moments with Myles, and some interesting observations from the outspoken brother Amir. Don't want to tell it all, just want to say it is a good book, and is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Wait, November 4, 2000

What a witty & wonderfully uplifting love story! And what a nice twist: the book is written from a male perspective and the main characters are African-American & Latino. A rare combination indeed! Ladies, if you're searching to read a romantic man's point of view regarding love & relationships, Good Peoples is the novel for you. Men, need a few how-to pointers and/or encouragement to hold out for that special lady despite typical 'home-boy' pressure? This too is the novel for you! Marcus Major has obviously written this exciting novel based on personal experience, observation & meaningful relationships with others. For those of us who still choose to wait on genuine love and believe that, that special person really does exist 'somewhere' on this planet - - read on... Through lead characters Myles & Marissa each reader will find some part of themselves re-enacted, either from the past or present. Hats off to Marcus Major! He forces us to not give up hope that in the end it IS worth waiting for love and to remember that anything (or anyone) worth having is also worth working for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's Hear It For The Boy!, September 9, 2000

I was first drawn to this book because the man on the cover holding that rose looks like me from the back. Then I discovered the author was local. I read this exceptional novel in two days! The story line was fresh, Amir was right on, and I enjoyed the spanish lingo. Some of the Amazon reviewers were concerned with Marissa's issues but what about Myles? I believe he scared her by being so accessible to her; most woman say they want that type of man. I think women want someone they feel they have earned. I would have adviced Myles to let Marissa miss him. The best thing about this book is the conversations it sparks. I (like Myles Moore) am a professional, and after I read this book I passed it to some colleagues and friends. Now that everyone has read the book, when we get together the book comes up, and it is amazing to me how the women see things so differently than us men. We all agreed that the ending was appropriate and believable. I'm hoping Mr. Major revisits these characters again in a future novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! I'M BEYOND IMPRESSED!, September 1, 2000
By
This review is from: Good Peoples (Hardcover)
GOOD PEOPLES definately does not read like a debut novel. The author has a real good grip on writing fiction like a well seasoned writer.

Mr. Major takes you into the lives of Myles and Marisa, as they journey through introduction, pass right by friendship, go straight to relationship and then the story begins.

Myles falls head over hills, valleys and mountains over Marisa and it's that totally engrossed kind of love that makes you want this type of man loving you. But according to Marisa, she seems to think that he's not quite the man she's looking for. Or is he?

As Myles and Marisa journey through the trials and tribulations of a still getting to know you type of relationship, Marisa keeps her eye on what's important....her career. But then again, she wants her cake and eat it too. The true questions is.....will love prevail? Read it and see.

GOOD PEOPLES is an absolutely wonderful work of fiction, enjoyable and a quick paced read and would be a great bookclub selection.

Who said that you couldn't have a hit on the first time out of the box? Well, Marcus Major proves can you can hit and have a HOMERUN!

Originally I hadn't planned on reading "Good Peoples" until my bookclub, APOOO, recommended this as our first selection. GIRLS, AM I GLAD THEY DID! Marcus has wonderful writing abilities not to mention a few "mess making" talents as well.

The characters are all believable in fact I know Myles personally....hehehehe - Jay A (he has a cat, Melvin, and not Winston, the bulldog). Marcus created characters full of depth and the relationships between them are believable.

"Good Peoples" is a must for any avid reader's library and for the person just starting to read. The story is sure to amuse, entertain and take you into the lives of people you are sure to love.

Get this one!

Marcus, you've got a NEW FAN!

I usually try not to compare one writer to another one in my reviews but I'll break that rule in this review. To me, this is the book that Eric Jerome Dickey wished he'd written when he wrote Liar's Game! Good Peoples was good, fun reading from the first page until the last. I never felt that the story went too "over-the-top" nor did I ever feel that there was just drama thrown in for drama's sake. Myles Moore and Marisa Marrero felt like two very real and very believable people and I loved how the roles were reversed with Myles being the "I want to get married and have children" person and Marisa was the "I can't say I love you" person. This book felt real to me from the beginning and I loved Marcus Major's writing style and his sense of humor. I haven't laughed this much reading a book since I read Cheaters (by Eric Jerome Dickey) over a year ago and I actually thought that this book was funnier which, for me, is saying a lot! Marcus Major has moved into my "will buy anything he writes" list and I am definitely looking forward to reading his latest book, 4 Guys and Trouble.

4.0 out of 5 stars "A Good Man Can Still Be Found", January 6, 2001
This review is from: Good Peoples (Hardcover)
"Good Peoples" is a good addition to any book collection. It is a book that I will certainly be re-reading in months to come. Although I am leery of "rookie writers", Marcus Major stepped up to the plate and has a winner. Myles is the man that every woman would love to meet. I know that I would. I wondered if such a man could really exist, and if he does, where is he hiding. I cheered for Myles and felt his pain. I was definitely in his corner shouting "Go Myles, Go!" I had mixed feeling about Marisa and did not know how to take her. Having a good sense of humor, I really liked the underlying humor throughout the book. I will be in line to purchase Marcus Major's new book, "Four Guys and Trouble". Go, Marcus, Go!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it!, April 7, 2000

What a refreshing change of pace! For once, the male character wants to settle down and the female has "commitment issues". I read a great deal of African American fiction and sometimes grow weary of the same old formula:professional career woman and her sassy sidekick look for love; career woman finds what she thinks is a good man, but can he REALLY be trusted?; sassy sidekick playa-hates because she's feeling left out; after a few bumps and snags, true love previals.

I found "Good Peoples" to be a pleasant change of pace, even if that change really only meant that the typical male/female roles were reversed. Although the lead male character was at times almost too good to be true in catering to his woman's every need, I found the dialogue between the two characters extremely realistic. I particularly enjoyed the playful banter between the two. I will anxiously await Marcus Major's next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read for Good Peoples, May 30, 2000
By
This review is from: Good Peoples (Hardcover)
The title of the book caught my eye and the first 5 pages drew me in. I was somewhat amazed to find that the main character was a man looking for love and not running from it. I thoroughly enjoyed the rollercoaster ride of Myles' and Marisa's relationship. She thought she could handle him like she handled all the other men in her life, but she found out that he didn't always bend the way she thought he should. Marisa had a lot of emotional junk to get over and I was glad that she realized that she had someone that truly loved her and that she was worthy of that love.

There were a few times when I wondered if Myles had a problem with his temper. He, also, had some serious jealousy issues. I did admire him for being himself, even when everyone picked on him for not having a woman in his life. In the end Myles got what he wanted, the woman he loved and the chance to write that book.

I congratulate you, Marcus Major, on such a exciting read. I look forward to reading more of your work.

4.0 out of 5 stars good readings, January 5, 2001
This review is from: Good Peoples (Hardcover)
This book will take you back to the whole dating scene, and the portray the struggles and laughs involved in the whole game. All of the characters are HILARIOUS! Since "Good Peoples" deals with an African-American brotha' madly in love with a beautiful professional Hispanic Princess, many of you will appreciate the way in which the author blesses us with an array of spanglish (spanish and english). I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good book about good people. Go read this and you won't be disappointed. Believe that!
