The first three lessons teach puppies to allow themselves to be held still and examined, and to be totally relaxed and trusting about the entire process. This is accomplished using gentle restraint and massage.
The Monks of New Skete, authors of The Art Of Raising a Puppy, were so impressed with these handling lessons, that they added a chapter to that book (called Lessons from the Pack), based on this video. They also told me they thought it was the missing link in dog training.
The first three lessons serve several vital purposes for your pup:
(1) It acts as dominance training, teaching your pup that you are the pack leader, and that you can be trusted in that role.
(2)Teaches your puppy to receive petting and touch without having to respond with nipping and mouthing. I often call it cuddle training!
(3)Prepares your puppy for the vet exam or for grooming by creating a dog who is relaxed about being restrained.
(4)Serves as bite prevention training - Dogs who have not been taught when young to accept restraint may bite the vet, groomer or owner when restrained as adults.
(5)Calming training - with this lesson, puppies learn to calm down under your hands. Then anytime you need to calm your pup, you can use these famiiar restraint and massage techniques and your pup will settle almost instantly. This can be used for the lifetime of your dog.
Subsequent lessons teach how to use your voice and hands, how dogs learn (showing interactions with mama dogs), toys and play, housebreaking, nipping and mouthing, jumping up, crate training, learning to be alone, and giving a dog a massage.
I use 10-12 puppies in the video, in actual training situations. Things are explained clearly and shown clearly, to give confidence to even the most inexperienced pup owner.
I have a stack of unsolicited letters of praise from satisfied pup owners who claim the techniques are wonderful and effective and gentle. Many letters comment on how much their children love the video and how it helps everyone in the family learn to work with their puppy correctly.
I also have a book available called Good Dogs, Bad Habits (available at amazon.com). The use of massage as a calming tool is also featured and taught in my book, which is an A-Z Guide to Behavior Problems.
I still do in-home dog training in Seattle, Wash. and am also available for phone consultations. Good luck with your new puppy!
