This hands-on video was created to help new puppy owners learn how to communicate effectively and gently with their new puppies, inorder to build trust and respect right from the start-from 7 weeks.

The first three lessons teach puppies to allow themselves to be held still and examined, and to be totally relaxed and trusting about the entire process. This is accomplished using gentle restraint and massage.

The Monks of New Skete, authors of The Art Of Raising a Puppy, were so impressed with these handling lessons, that they added a chapter to that book (called Lessons from the Pack), based on this video. They also told me they thought it was the missing link in dog training.

The first three lessons serve several vital purposes for your pup:

(1) It acts as dominance training, teaching your pup that you are the pack leader, and that you can be trusted in that role.

(2)Teaches your puppy to receive petting and touch without having to respond with nipping and mouthing. I often call it cuddle training!

(3)Prepares your puppy for the vet exam or for grooming by creating a dog who is relaxed about being restrained.

(4)Serves as bite prevention training - Dogs who have not been taught when young to accept restraint may bite the vet, groomer or owner when restrained as adults.

(5)Calming training - with this lesson, puppies learn to calm down under your hands. Then anytime you need to calm your pup, you can use these famiiar restraint and massage techniques and your pup will settle almost instantly. This can be used for the lifetime of your dog.

Subsequent lessons teach how to use your voice and hands, how dogs learn (showing interactions with mama dogs), toys and play, housebreaking, nipping and mouthing, jumping up, crate training, learning to be alone, and giving a dog a massage.

I use 10-12 puppies in the video, in actual training situations. Things are explained clearly and shown clearly, to give confidence to even the most inexperienced pup owner.

I have a stack of unsolicited letters of praise from satisfied pup owners who claim the techniques are wonderful and effective and gentle. Many letters comment on how much their children love the video and how it helps everyone in the family learn to work with their puppy correctly.

I also have a book available called Good Dogs, Bad Habits (available at amazon.com). The use of massage as a calming tool is also featured and taught in my book, which is an A-Z Guide to Behavior Problems.

I still do in-home dog training in Seattle, Wash. and am also available for phone consultations. Good luck with your new puppy!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST, MOST USEFUL PUPPY/DOG TRAINING I'VE EVER SEEN., March 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Good Puppy [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The video is not only extremely useful, but fun to watch. The scenes with puppies and dogs are completely real and appliable to everyone's home. The trainer, Jeanne, has an amazing understanding of how dogs think and how to communicate with them through their canine behavior. I've seen her train, and it's incredible how she can get any dog to happily adjust to acceptable behavior, quickly and lovingly. If you have a new pup, and follow the video's suggestions, you'll have a well-behaved happy dog, as I do, having followed her advice all the time. As the pup grows, read her book, "Good Dogs, Bad Habits". It's full of easy to find solutions to dog problems, and funny too. Her training dog phone number is: 206-547-7877. ENJOY!!

I have raised terriers all my life, so I'm no stranger to the need for dominance training, but this video demonstrated what I consider to be my past mistakes as the right way to train a young puppy. For example, slamming a hand sharply on a kennel door and yelling at a puppy to be quiet, or lecturing at length to a dog who clearly doesn't understand english--"What do you have? That is not a toy! Shame on you! Give me that! That is not yours. Don't you chew on that!" I would recommend the Monks of New Skete 3-video set instead. Their methods also include dominance training and ways to become the pack leader with your puppy, but their methods follow more closely standard behavioral techniques that seem more clear to the dog and more "centered" for the owner. Other people liked this video. Mine went in the garbage. I didn't even feel comfortable donating it to our local library.

A program designed to ease your 7-23 week old puppy into the training process. Gentle techniques emphasize communication with puppy. Designed to help you raise a calm puppy that will be responsive to your training, and helps to build the trusting relationship essential to training. END

We purchased this video before we even got our puppy, at the suggestion of a friend who was a vet's assistant. It has very practical advice and hands on demonstrations. We have watched it several times with our 4 year old so we are all using the same words and techniques. We plan to take obedience classes too but highly recommend this video to others to get started.

5.0 out of 5 stars This training tool is a must for all puppy owners!, November 22, 2004
This review is from: Good Puppy [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Nine years ago I was lucky enough to have found this video training tape. And ever sense, I have recommended this video to everyone I know with a new puppy. My husband and I were the proud owners of a new Rottweiler Puppy and wanted to make sure we could handle such a strong dog. This video gave us all the tools we needed to give us the best dog we have ever owned. The daily holding /training time with our Rottie produced a very sweet natured gentle dog that is marvelous to our three small children. It also allowed us to get intuned with our new puppy so we could have a better understanding of his needs. This video is a must for anyone wanting to train a dog to be a fantastic part of your family pack. Julie Smith CA.

5.0 out of 5 stars X Lazy Owner, December 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Good Puppy [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have given this video or suggested it to numerous people over the years. This training works! I had 3 young terriers that were all trained by these techniques and the most important thing I found was that there are no BAD DOGS...just lazy owners!
This video trains owners which to me is the first step. Being consistant is the second. I knew in order to have 3 terriers at one time, along with children, we all had to be trained. And so "we all" were for years due to Jeanne. My kids are all adults now and have dogs and children of their own and use this video. I am so happy "Good Puppy" is still out there!
