Editorial Reviews

Review

"An alienated high-tech project manager in Seattle tries to figure out his absurd life in Mills' debut novel with a sci-fi twist. Seattle oddball Maxwell Greyson is the narrator of this postmodern novel, which consists of Greyson's text messages, emails, chat-room threads, scripted sketches, avant-garde poetry, satirical lists and dialogues. A witty narrative about the quirks of the Internet age, bugged by an unsatisfying denouement." - Kirkus Indie

"Author Mills has an infectiously entertaining knack for punny wordplay and repartee that carries the story's metaplot along. And, yes, he deploys a profusion of emoticons along the way. Mills also created no fewer than 17 tie-in websites, each based on a different chapter, to supplement and hype this book, and even used the novel's Amazon paperback price tag as a numerical inside joke." - Kirkus Indie

Format: Paperback
As far as I'm aware, this is Matt Mills' first literary effort, and without a doubt in my mind, it is a great start to a potential literary career. Structurally,"Good Reception" strongly reminded of "House of Leaves" - a NYT bestseller. In this respect, Mills' has successfully blended a number of voices into one cohesive narrative. With respect to the narrative, and plot as a whole, it was my strong belief that Mills has a gift akin to Neal Stephenson in "Cryptomicon", in that he is able to discuss complex ideas with aplomb and humor that leaves such concepts accessible to any reader, from complex physics to mountaineering, underground restaurants, and the very nature of daydreams and dreams. While "Good Reception" is not a thriller, the questions that the novel presents will leave any reader guessing and wondering which reality they exist in, who Froderick Grey is and, whether is appropriate to constantly visit a coffee shop if the patrons of that coffee shop and the staff refuse to acknowledge one's existence.

In case you couldn't figure it out by my five star review, I profoundly enjoyed the book, and as an added bonus, thought the website for "Good Reception" was equally amazing. If you're looking for some new fiction by new authors for the holidays, or at any point, you should check out this book.
