Book Description

0931552125 978-0931552120 October 16, 2002
Poetry. Few people are in motion as much and as often as American Indians. Travel is, of course, more than recreation or even a way of life for American Indian people. Journeys were and remain a way of staying in touch with our first mother, the Earth. They're a result of seeing home as not just a place surrounded by human-made walls, but anywhere we find ourselves between Earth and Sky...Lee Francis's ON THE GOOD RED INTERSTATE is firmly within the tradition of American Indian "tribal travel poetry," [passing] effortlessly back and forth between past and present, between east and west, and between the worlds of the author's ancestors--Indian and non-Indian alike"--Joe Bruchac. Lee Francis is the National Director of Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers.

On the Good Red Interstate both instructs and delights the reader as you are transported in more ways than one. -- Joe Bruchac, author, Navajo Long Walk

This poetry book is the best I've read. Lee Francis writes poems for regular folks about real life. -- Roy Grady, independent professional truck driver

About the Author

Lee Francis is Laguna Pueblo, Anishinabe and Scots (Gunn Clan) on his mother's side and Lebanese on his father's. He spent the first fourteen years of his life in Cubero, a small Mexican land grant town located two miles from the Laguna Pueblo reservation.

Currently, Lee is the National Director of Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers. The vision of this international organization of Native storytellers and writers representing over 120 sovereign Native nations from 42 states, Canada, Mexico as well as non-Native members from the U.S. and countries in Europe, is "to ensure that the voices of Native Writers and storytellers—past, present and future—are heard throughout the world." He is also Associate Professor of Native American Studies at the University of New Mexico.

His poetry has appeared in Poet's Gallery, Emotions, The Magus Journal, Callaloo and others. He is the author of Native Time, A Historical Time Line of Native America, St. Martin's Press.
