This review is from: The Good Regiment (Paperback)
Verney dispells many of myths and legends about the role of the Carignan-Salieres Regiment in this well researched work. Cutting through much of the biased information and going to great depths to show these men for what they were: normal infantry men of their time. He counters the "golden haze" around the regiment and shows what affect the regiment had in Canada in informative and unbiased detail. A must read for any Candian wondering about the origins of their country.

Personally, I found the book disappointing. I expected some interesting stories that I "couldn't" find on-line myself. Just when I thought the stories were going to improve, the text ended mid-point in the book. Half of the book is Appendices!
The underlying theme of this book was to diminish the efforts of this Regiment. Though there were no great battles, the Regiment's mere presence in the Colony is what "saved" the Colony. How that was accomplished is irrelevant. The author portrays the group as a "bunch of Hooligans and criminals." Having served in the US Marine infantry some 50 years ago, I must say we made the Saliere Regiment look like Saints. Given the time frame 1650, a time when men were violent, I will say the regimnent was a "GOOD" group. Curious about the author's focus on downplaying the regiment's action, I decided to inspect the author's profile. A Britain's critique of a French Regiment--Ahh, that explains It.

what a gem! the French keep excellent records and Ancestry.com is very helpful with information and suggestions from other members. This book was recommended by a member and I found it a treasure for all those who have an interest in the early settlers of Quebec, Canada.
