Ego. Denial. Fear. Ambition. Accommodation. Patience. Indulgence.

Depending on how we use them, these "big seven" character traits can be our biggest assets--or our biggest liabilities. In the words of the author:
"The same traits that make you successful can be your downfall. That's the root of most crises and the point of this book." (p. 9)

In each chapter, the author presents how her "POWER" approach can be used to keep each of these traits in check: (p. 14):
* Pinpoint the core trait: Identify which trait is in play.
* Own it: Acknowledge that is can be both good and bad.
* Work through it: Process the role it's played in your life.
* Explore it: Consider how it could play out in the future.
* Rein it in: Establish how to re-achieve balance and control.

Exceptionally readable, this book is extremely well-written, organized, and engaging. The information in each chapter is presented as highly relevant crisis prevention topics including: signs suggesting the ego is not in check, common beliefs fueling denial, fear factors and management strategies, formulas for explosive ambition, guidelines for determining when accommodation is appropriate, factors underlying impatience, paths by which excessive indulgence can lead to a crisis, and the elements of an effective apology.

Each chapter distills the essentials of managing the seven character traits to hopefully help you avoid crises. But, in the event that a crisis does happen, the author offers her guidelines on navigating it (pp. 255):
1. Trust your gut.
2. Know the facts--not what you *want* them to be but what they *are.*
3. Never assume you know everything.
4. The truth always comes out--it's only a question of when.

I came into this book as a fan. I was having ABC Scandal withdrawal. I loved Kerry Washington's character. When I found out the series was based on Judy Smith and that she had a book out, I had to get this. I thought it would be a book about her crisis mananagement days, but it turned out to be much more, a must read. This was a self help book I think everyone need to read. The saying know thyself comes to mind when I read this. She gives you tools to deal with your worst enemy yourself. She talks about making lists and thats how I deal with personal crisis, I always ask myself before I do something, whats the worst thing that could happen if I do something, whats the worst thing could happen if I don't do something? Whats the best thing that would happen if I dont do something? Whats the best thing that can happen if I dont. In the book I loved how she says we get in most trouble because we don't do self examination. She talks about balance a lot, the same attriubutes that are good can be bad if we don't balance that attribute. I also loved how she didnt just talk about trouble she got high profile clients of and stop there, but she gave us tools to get out of our mess. I loved her even more for that. She talks about the big seven, ego, denial, fear, ambition, accomodation, patience and indulgance, and how if used in the right way these things are good, but used wrong they can be our self destruction. This is so a know thyself type of book, I love it. I'm using some of this for myself. Write on, write on Judy Smith.

Smith uses lots of examples in the book but nothing juicy or new. That made me stop and think...what did I think this book was about anyway? I guess I wanted it to along the storylines of the TV show Scandal but that is written by Shonda Rhimes. After stepping back and reading the book on its own merit it helped me think about how I handled crisis in my life...believe me things will be handled differently after reading this book. Know how to navigate the big seven: ego, denial, fear, ambition, accomandations, patience, and indulgence. Even more importantly master the art of apologies and know how to navigate a crisis. Smith is a genius.

Scandal, the new hit series on ABC, is based on Judy Smith's work experiences (Olivia,played by Kerry Washington). In this book Judy shares techniques and the rules she has formulated for herself. In addition, she explains why they work. In my opinion she is highly qualified for what she does: she is a lawyer, holds a degree in Communication, and has forged a name for herself in the 20 years or more of successful crisis management. I was not surprised by the quality of her writing, but I was greatly surprised that I felt she was speaking directly to me. She was not pontificating as an authority in her field, nor as a stuffed shirt authority(I've been there - you haven't). She was speaking to me as one friend to another(let me tell you what I did in a similar situation...). If you want some good sound advice from a friend, read this book.

I had high hopes for this one but it turned out that I don't know what she was trying to even convey other than her memoirs and a little common sense. Read more like a brag book. Like she was boasting about being in on some great knowledge that she fails to share with the reader. Its not a total loss, but its a slow read and you probably will not garner much from it if you already have a tactful non-narcissistic head on your shoulders. Honestly, I think this book needs to be read by narcissists because they'd really benefit from the advice. Fat chance of that I'm sure.
