I bought and read this book after telling my dad who is an English Teacher that I enjoyed Lolita by Nabokov. He said this is another unreliable narrator book and the descriptions seemed decent so I tried it out. It was a pretty decent read. With that being said, I feel it's pretty slow paced and not as much of a page turner as other things I've read. I would still recommend you check it out though.

I now read all Ford books. He is the most approachable modernist. He has huge respect for the reader. He is an amazing psychologist. No one can teach this writer about writing. He just stands alone from Parade's end to the good soldier. Four people interact about marriage and relations and sex. Very grown up. None of the strangeness of Joyce or Woolf. Really the best of all reads.

Although I admired this novel, I found it disjointed & confusing, not being sure who,the characters are and where and when the story is located, what with flashbacks and incomplete information about the characters only gradually being revealed. Having finished the book, I immediately started rereading it knowing the gradually revealed information and therefore I understood and enjoyed it more fully. It was an interesting experiment, but was the initial confusion really worthwhile? - (signed): John H. Field.

This short novel by Ford Maddox Ford is a masterpiece of a first person tale told by an unreliable idiot narrator who is watching his wife being seduced by a best friend, and doesn't see it. This kind of unreliable narrator started with Ring Lardner's HAIRCUT , James TURN OF THE SCREW and Lytle's A NAME FOR EVIL. These kind of books require the reader to "read between the lines" and become a creative reader first class.

I don't remember disliking a book so much. The narrator is disturbing and unstable. I recognize the rich women and the sexual mores of that era, but I don't really care about them.

I found the entire book to be a waste of time. I'm certain there are people in the world like the characters in the book. Don't know how it got in the best classics of all time
