Aloe Blacc's CD was reccommended to me by Amazon and I'm glad for the pointer as I'd probably have missed this otherwise. I love his rich tenor voice.

With a retro Soul sound remniscent of Curtis Mayfield or Marvin Gaye, his lyrics touch mainly on social issues. Opening cut is the groovy "I need a dollar" with darting horns, an insistent piano riff, and lyrics told from the view point of someone laid off. "Green lights" is organ-driven Soul, while the guitars in the funky "Hey brother" sound like they stepped out of Shaft.

Other standouts are the lilting Reggae "Miss fortune", the falsetto-sung laid back "Life so hard" (with theatrical strings, a great echoing guitar solo, and lyrics touching on hunger, war and more), the breezy "Femme fatale", the bouncy "Loving you is killing me" (with nice layered harmonies), "If I" ("If I sang a song, would you sing with me / if I shed a tear, would you cry with me?"), and the Gospel-tinged "Momma hold my hand" (with autobiographical lyrics remniscing on his childhood).

The production is light and free, perfect for this uplifting CD. Highly reccommended!

The title says it all. Although a soul album (and I mean soul in the classic sense and not Hip Hop) this is modern and poignant. It just does not get any better than this.

I hope he gets his just due soon, this album is incredible. I love to hear him rhyme in his group alongside Exile, Emanon. However, he doesn't rap at all on this album. He has a very buttery, soulful voice. Tracks like "I Need A Dollar", "Miss Fortune", "Femme Fatale" Jump out at me, but they are all very great tracks. Excellent album

What a revelation this artist & album is. One of the best singers & musicians I have come across in years. Combining smooth vocals reminiscient of Sam Cooke,Marvin Gaye,Curtis Mayfield & Stevie Wonder, this guy is a revelation. Discovered him by accident on an english chat show when he sang "I Need A Dollar" & "Loving You Is Killing Me", and he rocked the house. For any person who has a mother listen to "Mama Hold My Hand" and try your best to hold back the tears, it is an instant classic for the ages. Listen to the album a few times and you'll find yourself humming quite a few tracks off of it. Look this guy up on youtube and see his fantastic rendition of the Sam Cooke song "A Change Is Gonna Come", he makes it his own. Cannot wait for him to come to Australia where I live. Will be the first person in line to buy a ticket to his concert.

Great production and lyrics,I absolutley love this cd,its on heavy rotation. Its quite hard to find a soul ,funk cd that doesnt have atleast a couple of boring songs ,Aloe Blacc's work doesnt fall into that category .

Thank you, again, Amazon for your daily deals offerings for without today's deal, "I Need a Dollar", I would probably never have come across this album. And, oh how happy I am that I did! The musicianship is fantastic, the vocals are smooth and interesting, the arrangements pull the listener in, and the album becomes not so much background music, but a listening experience. Definitely cash spent well!

got a chance recently to listen to his album all the way through and it had some cool moments. vocally he reminds of Anthony Hamilton from the Bill Withers school of Harmony and tone. Miss fortune is a cool cut and I need a Dollar is very direct and on time. dug the arrangements and Production here. this is a cool album and versatile.
