Reluctant Fan,

OK, for the record, I'm a 48 year old white male. I'm married and a father of 2 grown children and have 3 grandchildren. I own my own business and I think I'm somewhat educated. So, why in the world do I like this album? I have asked myself this question everytime I listen to it. I guess it's because the guys who made it appear to have had a heck of a good time doing it. The rhymes are fun and the beat is simple and catchy. There are some raunchy "...man from Nantucket" type of lyrics that made me bust out laughing. I especially enjoyed my wife's reaction to the songs.Though she gasped and turned scarlet, she laughed in spite of herself. Surprisingly, I liked every song on the album and found the inclusion of "Hush" a real treat. Look, this isn't U2, R.E.M., Burning Spear or Bob Marley. This is a bunch of folks who have produced an album of good, dirty, infectious fun. I like (love?) the album and highly recommend it to anyone 18 and older. Afroman, I anxiously await your next effort and hope my recommendation doesn't cause you grief from your friends.

COMEDY AT ITS BEST!!,
By Wildcat1974 (LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA United States) - See all my reviews

Afroman is HILARIOUS!!!Don't come at this album thinking you're going to hear hip-hop at its finest, or even serious music. Although "The Good Times" evokes frequent memories of Too Short, Nate Dogg and hip-hop of the mid-80s, Afroman takes things to a whole 'nother level. The debut single "Because I Got High" is only the tip of the iceberg. From his frequent jaunts about his hometown of Palmdale, CA and its abundance of malt liquor, white kids to beat up and beautiful women (to paraphrase in the interest of decency) to his delightfully ghetto hybrid of Bay Area and Southern hip-hop, Miami booty music and Negro Spirituals (if you can believe that), Afroman takes every conceivable Black ghetto stereotype and blows it to the stratosphere in such a way that you can't help but fall on the floor, guffawing. You will not, I repeat, WILL NOT enjoy this album if you take it seriously. If you are the discriminating hip-hop enthusiast/purist and you embark on this "ghettorific" journey without turning off your Wack Music Radar, you WILL be highly disappointed. There are a number of ironic things about "The Good Times" -- number one, although this is clearly a case of a bunch of Looney-Tunes having way too much fun in the studio, the fact is, the album just exudes FUN. Number two, although they're not trying to set the world on fire and change the music industry, they are probably the most unique artists currently out. The most ironic thing is that the brothas can actually SING (at least, they could if they really wanted to)!! Treat this album as our parents and grandparents treated the Richard Pryor albums. Hide it from the kiddies (you definitely do not want them subjected to the language and subject matter presented), but enjoy this guilty pleasure for yourself. For those who consider themselves above this type of music, consider this: Once I came down off my laughter high, I thought of other possible angles, different, more intellectual ways of interpreting what's being said beyond the obvious, and if you think more profoundly about it, "Because I Got High" speaks not just of the ills of drug abuse, but any other drugs (of sorts) that we use as crutches, that we subconsciously use to hold us back, such as sugar, sex, alcohol, cigarettes, or in my case, FEAR. Give it a shot. You might just enjoy yourself. And if so, you'll REALLY enjoy the website. P.S. It works especially well on days when nothing seems to go right and you need a pick-me-up. There's no better therapy than a good belly laugh.

Refreshing, original,

"The Good Times" succeeds because Afroman throws caution to the wind and produces an album that is often catchy and amusing. The subject matter ranges from casual drug and alcohol use to women and poking fun at racism. In the end, the end result is fresh and original. After a few listens, it's hard to forget this album.

Not What You May Think,

If you're high when you listen to this outrageous album, you're going to think it's all about the joys of "Tumbleweed". But listen up when you're straight... Afroman is telling people what life on drugs and drink is really like, and he's being hugely entertaining at the same time. Pretty sneaky... His real name is Joseph Foreman, and he's a former church drummer and security guard, who is amazed that his little garage band song "Because I Got High" has made him a famous recording star. The real dope on his attitude towards weed is when he was asked by Lisa Allen-Agostini of the LA TImes if he still smokes. He said, "Not if you've got things to do. And I got lots of things to do."This is a smart guy... there's something in this album for you if you're a homey with a blunt and a Colt 45, or if you're the Narc on the beat. Oh yeah, and the music is great.

I'm writing this review because I'm high(cause im high)I'm giving this 5 stars becasue I'm high(cause I'm high) If i dont get 1 helpful vote, I'll know why(why bri) cause im high cause im high becasue im high. No for real this album is da bomb. Afro man's debut is crazy. His first single "becuz i got high" is just a funky outrageous little tune. Of corse his lyrics aren't top notch but the song is catchy as hell and the hook is basically plain but in a way so brilliant it makes you wanna sing along like a little kid. This short 10 track album is great, every song has its moment. I alos love Tumbleweed, Palmdale, Mississippi and The American Dream. What else can I say.....5 stars!!!!!!!!

Good, but not for awhile...,

Don't get me wrong, Afroman did a good job with "The Good Times", but i realized that after listening to the same songs talking about getting high, drunk, and freakin' girls got sick after a while. However, i can tell u that some songs i still like. Here's what i think is good and bad about "The Good Times":1. Because I Got High - way to played out on the radio, i liked it before i got the cd, but after i didn't ever wanna hear it again. 2. Crazy Rap - this is one i never really got tired of. It's a good song about all the crazy mix-ups with girls from all across the world. 3. She Won't Let Me... - never liked it to much, but it's funny and has a catchy beat. It will wear down though, and u probably won't care for it anymore. 4. Hush - liked it when i first heard it, but didn't like it to much afterwards.( One of the only songs without a million cusswords in it ). 5. Tumbleweed - never really heard it to much, so i can still stand it. Don't like the words too much though. 6. Let's All Get Drunk - great beat and good words. One song i actually think could be a good hit if released. 7. Tall Cans - cool song, too long though, in my opion. 8. Palmsdale - best on the cd, i love the beat and the words. This song is the only reason this cd hasn't been outta my cd player since i got it. 9. Mississippi - second best, but wears down after awhile. 10. The American Dream - just him talking to the beat of "Because I Got High", so no really good track. 11. Because I Got High ( Extended ) - this really makes me mad that this is on the cd but is not listed on the back or on the track listings .... it's an awesome track though and isn't as played out as the radio edit. So that's what i say about "The Good Times" by Afroman. NOTE: THIS IS A GOOD CD FOR A FREIND TO BUY, AND FOR U TO JUST BORROW OR BURN. BELIEVE ME, YOU'LL GET SICK OF IT SOONER OR LATER. I hope this review helped!!

Why this album?,
By Jin (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Good Times (Audio CD)
Simple, unless you were lucky enough to discover him about a year before Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, this is the only option you have. Personally, I happen to own "Sell Your Dope" and "Because I Got High" as I discovered him a long time ago in a record store in Birmingham, AL. While others mocked me, I waited patiently for Afroman to be "discovered" and when that finally happened I was the one laughing because everyone else was stuck with this very good but simultaneously watered down version of a great CD. My advice to all of you: Buy this album but search EVERY record store for a few straggler copies of the original two.

This CD proves that Afroman is the best rapper that
Universal lost. This CD is a 5 star quality. It has catchy tunes and tight allllllllllllllll the way through just like his 2nd album (Afroholic...The Even Better Times). To all Froholic fans who thought that he was finished, check out his website www.afromanmusic.com and see his latest CDs such as "Afroholic...The Even Better Times" "Jobe Bells" & "4RO:20" (this one is real tight), Buccooouuuuuuuu!.

Afroman's "The Good Times" is a fun and talented album. It is my favorite rap album I own. Along with Eminem and a couple other smaller rap artists (Blackalicious) Afroman brings in a new energy and musical talent into the rap community. His songs are just so damn catchy and good. The songs aren't just simplistic bass beats and drum riffs, but area actually musical. Then, his lyrics are just hilarious, with great rhymes. From his parody in Colt 45 of "Rapper's Delight" to all of the other funny sexual content and drug jokes he has, it makes you laugh after numerous times hearing it. I think it was kind of proper that he did a song for Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back because lots of Afroman's humor is like the "low brow" aspect of Kevin Smith's humor. It is obviously written by someone who finds sex and drugs immaturely funny, but in a way, it is also making fun of sex and drug humor. And, for those of you who have heard "Because I got High" from Jay and Silent Bob, musically speaking, none of his other songs are like that one. They are usually faster and somewhat mor emelodic, and his rapping is like another percussion instrument in the song. However, content wise, the lyrics are very similar.

Best CD Ever!,

I first heard afroman at a party (Crazy Rap and Because I Got High). While a lot of people were just amused by the explicit and raunchy lyrics, I noticed a great rapper with catchy beats and great, though raunchy lyrics. Every one of the songs on this album are great, as Afroman is the only rapper that makes real use of true rhyme in all of his songs. A lot of the tracks such as "Crazy Rap" and "Because I Got High" are very light hearted, but the afroman also delivers deep and wonderful lyrics in "Palmdale." I can listen to this album over and over and over again without getting tired. I was gonna finish this review but then I got high...
