5.0 out of 5 stars Lesser known "Bare" tracks!, December 7, 2000
This review is from: For the Good Times (Audio CD)
While we're all familiar with Bare's RCA work (and even his later CBS work), his Mercury hits have really seemed to fall by the wayside when it comes to being given historical importance, but yet his Mercury work is some of his best work.

This set gives a good overview of why Bare's Mercury recordings deserve more attention. "Sylvia's Mother" is suddenly taken from the pop realm and is transformed into a country song in Bare's own unimitatable style. Listen to the treatment given to the Ray Price peice "For the Good Times" & this suddenly becomes a must have. He also gives us his interpretation of "Leavin' On a Jet Plane" and thereby covering this Peter, Paul & Mary tune before John Denver did. "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died" came from the pen of fellow Mercury labelmate Tom T. Hall, but as with the other songs in this set, Bare takes it & makes it his own.

For fans of Bobby Bare, this is a much recommended set. I really wish Bear Family would re-release it's box set on Bare's Mercury output, but in the meantime, this is quite a set!

Bobby Bare has got to be one of the all time writer singer talents. He has a talent that is hard to beat. I have had the privilage of listening to him for many years.
