4.0 out of 5 stars Turn it up, July 11, 2002

Yes. Yes. Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes! This is what I am talking about. This is what I need. A Norwegian band that sounds like the Zombies with punk attitude. A group with a bearded singer and cute tambourine girl to boot. A band to make music perfect for the summer.
The Cato Salsa Experience follows so many other bands in the
supposed "Garage Rock" revival. For my money they are the best of the bunch. They are maybe not the tightest band in the
world, but they make up for it with pure sonics. The album starts off with that greatest of all rock standbys, the grunt. "Listen to me Daddy'O" is simple stupid fun. One of those
songs where you look in the mirror and scream "you dumbass, why didn't I do that?!" Its no fluke though, evidenced by the follow up "So, the circus is back in town" a great rousing anthem, as is the later song "Time to freak out!". "M.F." introduces my favorite aspect of the album, the organ. Man oh man do I love the organ. I think every band should have one. Honestly. Just check out that groovy solo on "Got soul if you want it" and tell me that the organ is not a musical must have. Come on. I dare you.
Now I don't know how they got away with it, but "I can give you anything" is a carbon copy of the old garage standard "I can only give you everything", made famous by Van Morrison and later
the MC5. From guitar to verse the song is a slightly modified version of the original, yet no note is made of this. Odd. It doesn't take away from the fact that it's a great song. And it
certainly doesn't tarnish the fact that this is a great album. With all the talk that America is re-staking its claim as the rock capitol of the world, its good to see that Norway can
still represent.

4.0 out of 5 stars ....Can't...stop....the...foot-tapping!!!!!!!!!, November 25, 2002

After a few rotations in the ol' disc player and a live concert experience I can assure you that this album will rock your socks off. It is such a breath of fresh air to hear a band playing for smiles and leave the angst and self-deprecating lyrics to the million other bands that tout the "grrrr" of grunge days past.
Compared with other "throw-back" bands, CSE show some real power and creativity to give you what you heard decades ago but still sound fresh. Plus, they're from Norway! How cool is that?

4.0 out of 5 stars The soundtrack of having a good time, June 7, 2011

This review is from: A Good Tip for a Good Time (Audio CD)
The debut album of CSE reminds me a little of what The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion did back in the early 1990's. Lo-fi, strange noises, catching riffs and so on. Just a little less crazy - Cato Salsa isn't trying to break the rules of R'n'R or blues like the JSBX. If the early JSBX was a group of rascals, then CSE on this album is perhaps a bunch of those nice but lively boys that make people say boys will be boys; inventing nothing new but having a good time and playing (with) the music. Being not too strictly produced this lo-fi garage rock sounds like the band has had a good time making the album.

I can't believe I hadn't heard of them before. This album is a blend of straight up rock n roll with a heavy garage rock sound. Just get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best of last year, April 27, 2003

Sneaking under the radar of the new rush of garage rock/Euro imports, Cato Salsa is one of the most solid and exciting. More diverse than The Hives, less AC/DC headbanging than the Datsuns, less cutesy rock shuffle than The Libertines and The Strokes, The CSE literally recorded in their garage and yet created an full stereo sound that fills up your room. Starting off with a balls-out instrumental and never slowing down while diversifying their playing, this is one that needs to be had before June 1. It is summer music, in the tradition of Kula Shaker. On top of this, they put on a great live show without prostrating themselves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underproduced rock 'n roll, as it should be, January 4, 2003

This CD is a breath of fresh air in these days of over-produced rock. The sound can somewhat be related to the older days of Lenny Kravitz with a little more of an edge. The CD starts out with a not so strong track but picks up in the second with "So, The Circus is Back In Town". The CD is good, if not a little repetative. I must admit many songs sound alike. The highlights are "So, The Circus Is Back In Town", "Deadbeat" and "Time To Freak Out".

5.0 out of 5 stars Popular garage rock, actually recorded in a garage, October 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A Good Tip for a Good Time (Audio CD)
This is the stuff. I first saw them on Senor Moby's House of Music on MTV where many new and unknown artists are recognized. Once i saw the video for So, the Circus is Back in Town i had to hear more. The whole cd is good, with my favorites being So, the Circus is Back in Town, and High Heeled Leather Boots. They use their limited instruments to bring an authentic sound and hard hitting vocals. These Norweigans are different from The White Stripes and The Hives, these guys are as pure and authentic as it gets when it comes to garage rock because it's not a fad, it's not the hot music to listen to, garage rock has been around forever.
