3.0 out of 5 stars Conflicted
Deciding what rating to give this book left me a bit conflicted. Several of these recipes are excellent - healthy, simple, inexpensive and loved by every dog I've given them to. That alone seems to be plenty of reason to get your hands on this book.

This is a great doggie cook book. I live in Charlotte, NC and Barbara Burg owns and runs the K-9 Cafe in Charlotte's historic Southend.

This is the best and most yummy cook book, the doggie daiquiris yummy and human friendly as well. I have purchased this book and make yummy treats for my pups all the time. I have also given to my friends who love the doggie carrot cake. I recommend it highly to anyone who loves to bake and loves their dog.

3.0 out of 5 stars Conflicted, December 19, 2010

Deciding what rating to give this book left me a bit conflicted. Several of these recipes are excellent - healthy, simple, inexpensive and loved by every dog I've given them to. That alone seems to be plenty of reason to get your hands on this book.

Unfortunately, those shining stars comprise only a fraction of the book. Many of the recipes contain ingredients of impractical expense or questionable safety. I'm sure that my dog would love liver and salmon pates, but I doubt that I'm the only reader who finds such ingredients out of the budget for puppy treats. As for safety, a surprising number of the given recipes contain cheese and other dairy ingredients which dogs are not intended to digest. Although they probably won't do any harm in small amounts, I would not advocate making them a regular part of your pet's diet.

My ultimate suggestion is that you get your hands on a physical copy of this book, either through your library or a local bookstore, before you decide to buy. It's best to flip through it and discern for yourself whether it's useful and appropriate for your needs and your dog's diet.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Experience (27-Jan 2011), January 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was quite happy when the book arrived within the expected timeframe. After some time browsing the different recipes, I decided to start off by cooking the most healthy treat for my little terrier, a 'Low fat Veggie biscuit (pg 102) which consisted of the ingredients of carrot, rolled oats, eggs, parsely, garlic and rye flour. He was already eating all of those ingredients well but he hadn't had rye flour before. He is on an extremely good diet, very bright, healthy and energetic and I didn't think the organic rye flour that I had bought would be any problem for him.

However I was wrong to find out, and in shock after I came home from work one day, he was so sick, weak and crawling close to me. There was vomit and alot of blood diarorohea everywhere in the house. And this was just from one little biscuit that was introduced in his diet.

After $600AU later from the hospital vet bill, where he stayed overnight on intravenous fluids, pain relief and antibotics, I can honestly say that from a first hand experience using this book was not positve. Those considering to buy this book, please be highly observant on your dog (and for any new dietary changes). Give very small amounts over time and check closely on how he's/she's going. Check for any loose stools too (a warning indication).

It is not my intention to discourage anyone from this book. I was hoping to share a good experience here but unfortunately it didn't happen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Home made dog treats, December 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The look of the book is adorable. My intent was to find a cookbook w/recipes for dog biscuits. There are only a few recipes for dog cookie like treats and too many other things that I will probabally not make. The idea for the book is cute but I need more recipes for biscuits.
