5.0 out of 5 stars John Thaw, Russell Crowe, both great Peter Mayle characters

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Year Soundtrack missing lots of favorites, March 18, 2008
By
This review is from: A Good Year (Audio CD)
Ordered the soundtrack and immediately sent it back because many of the really good songs from the movie were omitted. I'll just have to watch the DVD a lot to enjoy that music, especially when Russell Crowe and Marilyn Cotillard are sitting at the outside cafe watching the movie and listening to the song being sung. I believe the song is called Boum...not on the soundtrack. I would rather have had that than Patti Paige.

There Are Some Nice tunes on here , but leaving off a show stopper like BOUM was a CRIME!!
There are at least three cuts on this soundtrack that could of easily been cut out to make room for more relevant and much better songs. What were they thinking ? Me thinks what songs someone had a piece of.

5.0 out of 5 stars John Thaw, Russell Crowe, both great Peter Mayle characters, April 16, 2009
This review is from: A Good Year (Audio CD)
I love the Peter Mayle stories. I love the concept, the beautiful old French manor house, the vineyards, and the interesting French characters. I spent a year and a half in France in the US Army and I loved every minute of it. It was MOST interesting and exciting and I especially loved the countryside and the quaint, ubiquitous French villages and especially the tremendous historical treasury that fills the entire country. Peter Mayle, in his biographical work, "A Year in Provence" used John Thaw to portray himself during the year it took to restore his wonderful old chateau in Provence. But in this movie, "A Good Year", a fictional story decorates the same chateau (I believe it is) and region that has several love stories combined. First, there is Russell Crowes' love for himself (very nacissistic) and his growth of character which leads to him falling in love with a charming French girl and his long lost niece all the while his love grows for the legacy his late uncle has left him...the chateau and the environs. A very satisfying movie visually and emotionally and I loved every moment of it! I recommend highly, especially for Peter Mayle and Russell Crowe fans!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good little bit of cinema, April 4, 2007

ANZAC "dog nut" (Billings, MT USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Good Year (Audio CD)
I read this book years ago and it has stuck with me, so I was excited to see the preview for this film. I had to wait until it came out on video because my town's theatres cater to the teenage mainstream (slasher gore, remakes of slasher gore, CGI, hollywood (deliberately NOT capitalized!)formula films, etc.)

To be honest, the first time through the film did not dazzle but, as with most of Ridley Scott's stuff, you simply have to watch it more than once to really SEE it and get to know the character's stories. In this case love stories - Max's love of money and power; DuFlout's love of the land; a town's love of their way of life; a nephew's love for his uncle; a young woman's love for a man she never met; a man's love for a woman and a place.
The scenery is spectacular, the supporting cast is by turn funny, sincere and slimy, and I think Russell Crowe's charater may start off a bit of a phony and that's how he's playing him.

My husband, who is normally, "If this has 'feelings' I'm not watching" really liked the story. Yes, it's a bit predictable, and sometimes that's just what I want. In a world that's so short attention span, Wow I've never seen that before, Gee, that looks almost real- it's nice to find a sweet little love story that shows a place and people we wish we really knew and works out the way we all wish life could.

(I got the soundtrack too.)
A Good Year

We had seen the movie, A Good Year, and fell in love with it and the scenery but especially the soundtrack. Thus, I checked on Amazon and located the CD of the same for my sister as a Christmas gift. We have played the music so much already and enjoy it tremendously.

loved the movie and couldn't resist the cd.....charming music, romantic, uplifting, and my favorite, teeny yellow polka dot bikini in French! Hated that song, love it on this track. A song by Josephine Baker, then The Wedding Samba, which has one dancing involuntarily. Unexpectedly - Old Cape Cod (yes, the old song by Patti Page). An interesting mix of music - a gentle roller coaster of emotion. Having a blue day? Play this!

5.0 out of 5 stars As beautiful as the movie!, December 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

The songs bring the images of Provence, and the scenes of the film. Besides, they have a nostalgic tone...just like one of the movie scenes: a little table, a cigar, a chair in a garden, a sunny day, spring, flowers, birds, old songs....and forget about everything else.

One of the movies I can watch over and over and the CD is wonderful. It would be perfect if it had the one missing song from Alizee but makes up for it at the end.
