The most clever, imaginative record I've heard in some time,

When you put this album into your CD player, Logan Whitehurst immediately whisks you away into a world slightly askew. With 21 tracks, he spares very little, revealing stories of his relationship with Vanilla, his snowman friend, lizards, fish, noodles, and volcanoes. This is a beautiful pop composition nothing short of brilliant. Whitehurst is, for me, one of those musicians you hope stays independent just so you can say "I know of him and you don't," but, at the same time, you hope gets HUGE so that everyone can hear what this talented young troubadour has to offer.

I don't want this to sound too crazy, but this album is magnificent. Not just a good novelty or indie record. It's outstanding!
I first heard Logan Whitehurt at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. He performed live at a lecture by Dr. Demento, of the legendary Dr. Demento Show. I went because I was bored and left with one of the best albums I'd heard in a long time - Goodbye, My 4-track. The songs are addictive, the production is superb and the lyrics are genius. A definite A+. If only albums like this would get more attention... I would recommend this for everyone.

All 22 tracks on this disc are pure gold. If you like TMBG, you MUST check this out. I've been listening to this record for almost a year now, and the tracks are still in my head. I don't mind though, because they are THAT good. If you still aren't convinced, Google him. There's an archive of his early out-of-print albums, which is apparently approved by his record label and his family. It's really fantastic stuff. Rest in peace, Logan.

Logan Whitehurst, the über-indie pop genius, has outdone himself with "Goodbye, My 4-Track." If you don't mind switching from lizards and fish to robot cats to prosthetic brains (and back again), this record is sure to keep you humming all day long -- which may or may not be a good thing. The music is catchy and refreshingly unassuming, and the clever lyrics will keep you laughing out loud no matter how many times you hear them. The fact is, this record is just plain entertaining. There's no way around it. If you are looking for comfort after heartbreak or are angry at an unjust world, this is NOT the CD for you. If, however, you just want to have a good time, pop "Goodbye, My 4-Track" into your stereo and enjoy yourself.

So, Logan Whitehurst, the best and goofiest man known alive, is yet the most pure genious. After seeing him for his cd release show, I got the disc, brought it home, gave it a listen to, and realized that he is one man that can put out a cd JUST as good as he puts on preformances. These songs are so fun-filled and boppy, yet you can still take him as a serious artist. That's the beauty in it. I gave it 4 stars only because there were a few songs that I skip over, maybe for simply not being in the mood to hear them. But, I would highly reccomend this cd because not only do I love it, but my grandparents do TOO. (no joke)

If you listen just once to Goodbye, My 4-Trak, I guarantee that these songs will play back in your head for days--and you won't mind. Intelligent, hilarious lyrics are coupled here with catchy, sophisticated tunes. I played it for three friends in one sitting. One woman immediately ordered three of them. The other two each ordered a copy. All ages love this stuff. If you buy one CD this year---buy this one!

This CD is my favorite discovery of the year. I'm so glad I heard Robot Cat on the radio and called the station to learn who the artist was.
I adore each and every song. This is good clean toe-tappin fun. I suspect Logan Whitehurst is a genius. But beware! At the advice of Amazon, I also tried the James Kochalka CD, recommended along with Goodbye, My 4 Track. It was just obnoxious. Not entertaining at all, just a stupid disappointment. So there you go: Logan Whitehurst - YES! James Kochalka - NO

It's as if They Might be Giants wrote lyrics, Moxy Fruvous filled in the harmonies and Firesign Theater popped in for some tea.

I first heard of Logan Whitehurst in 2003 when I started listening to recordings of The Dr. Demento Show, after I hadn't heard it in quite a while. The song was "Your Brain Fell Out," and there was something oddly catchy about it. Maybe it was the production, the Brian Wilson-esque harmonies, or that one of the loops in the song reminded me of a computer science teacher I had in college who had an annoying habit of explaining FORTRAN commands as ways of telling the computer, "Hey, machine!"
After that, I heard "Lizard and Fish," "Prosthetic Brain," "The Robot Cat," and "Happy Noodle Vs. Sad Noodle." All were instant favorites. I then heard the show on which Logan was Dr. Demento's in-studio guest. "Me And The Snowman" and "How Ya Doin' Emily" -- more classics! I ordered this CD from Pandacide in March of 2004, and it arrived the day my wife left for a brief out-of-state trip. I was feeling a bit down and lonely, but upon putting Goodbye, My 4-Track into my car's CD player, I found my mood elevated instantly. What I heard was the influence of many classic sounds, including those of Brian Wilson, Paul Revere & The Raiders, "Weird Al" Yankovic (of course), and even Snoop Dogg. Logan's senses of humor and music proved to be nothing short of genius. |
