Biography

I’m highly motivated,” says postmillennial troubadour Jeremy Fisher. “I love getting my hands in there.” The Vancouver-based writer/artist used those hands (which are generally affixed to his trusty acoustic guitar) to shoot the stop-motion footage and fashion the anthropomorphic title character of his $60 homemade video for “Cigarette,” which has became a viral phenomenon of mega-proportions on… Read more in Amazon's Jeremy Fisher Store

Editorial Reviews

Seconds into Jeremy Fisher’s Goodbye Blue Monday, listeners might think that they have accidentally queued up a "Greatest Hits of the Sixties" collection. Fisher’s "Scar That Never Heals" kicks off with an acoustic guitar strum heavily influenced by Neil Diamond’s "Cherry Cherry," while the subsequent melody feels like it was culled from the book of Simon and Garfunkel circa "Feelin’ Groovy." Rather than seeming like a cheap imitation, though, Fisher’s emulations of such classic melodies simply show how joyful and charismatic Fisher’s songwriting skills and vocals are. The disc is more than just sonically satisfying. It has lyrical teeth as well. Fisher has a tendency to seek out news stories and then explore the human element behind them. On this--his third disc--topics range from the tortured prisoners at Abu Grabe ("American Girls") to the contentious shooting of a man at a Miami airport ("Lay Down (Ballad of Rigoberto Alpizar)"). Largely focused on love, Fisher’s personal stories prove compelling as well, most notably the joy-laden "Remind Me" and the bluegrass-infused romance-gone-wrong song "Jolene." With everything from jingle-jangle acoustic guitars ("Sula") to his country-meets-folk harmonies to the production and musical contributions by fellow Canuck Hawksley Workman, Goodbye Blue Monday is a joy to listen to and offers a host of poignant--even downright educational--lyrics to boot. --Denise Sheppard

5.0 out of 5 stars Add Paul Simon + Ben Kweller + Bob Dylan + Ben Lee..., August 2, 2007
This review is from: Goodbye Blue Monday (Audio CD)
Insightful, playful, spunky, dramatic, passionate, catchy, soulful, smart, addictive.
That's really all you need to know. Oh, and the point that this is an artist to keep your eye (and ear) on.

If the abridged version of this review doesn't quite cut it for you, then by all means, keep reading.
I'm rethinking my initial comparison to Paul Simon, Ben Kweller, Bob, and Ben (but too lazy to change the title). It doesn't quite cut it. Fisher's musical style, while distinct in its own right, was definitely influenced by early folk and blues, and there's a spark of what I can only describe as a distinctly Guthrie vibe (I wonder if that makes sense to the rest of the world?). There's also a kind of indie pop feel (thus the comparison to the two Bens). On top of all that, Fisher's own unique personality really shines through in his music. His style, while fun, is well-rounded; several of his songs are politically driven (but not overbearingly so), and he also manages to convey a fair range of emotions. In sum, Jeremy Fisher shows a great deal of promise here, and I absolutely recommend "Goodbye Blue Monday."
