Goodbye "Shake Your Ass" Hello "Best of 2001",
By diro (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub) (Audio CD)
The duet of Groove Armada is back and their sophomore release is a much more mature and complex piece of work then their critically acclaimed 1999 release, "Vertigo". (Reviewer's note: I thought Vertigo was one of the best CDs I picked up that year) "Goodbye Country" fuses a blend of soulful-hiphop, house vibes, dub-style beats, down tempo rhythms, and nicely orchestrated traditional instruments. This album has much more depth and width to it than Vertigo. While there are enough tracks that could easily be played at your favorite dance hall for pumping beats (Suntoucher, Superstylin, Fogma, Raisin' the Stakes), there are several tracks which are downtempo enough for those late Sunday afternoons and late night chill sessions (Healing, Edge Hill, Join Hands). What is most evident in Groove Armada's latest release is the variety of musical talent and cross-section of musical styles that were gently and delicately incorporated together. This is probably the best new release of 2001 that I have picked up this year, hands down. Cato and Findlay won't disappoint. Set the EP speed on "groove" and enjoy. Moving in stereo - d.i.roberts

Get into This "Groove.",
By The Groove (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews

In a world of connect-the-dots pop, Groove Armada offers an alternative to the instant gratification dance music that dominates our airwaves. "Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)" is a winning hodgepodge of soul, hip hop, house, and pop that reaffirms the group's status as one of the leading names in down-tempo electronica. Merging electronic beats with real instruments, the tracks feature warm vocals, textured melodies, and bangin' beats. They soothe the soul like a tall glass of iced tea in July. Like most novices, my first exposure to Groove Armada was through a handful of chillout albums I own. Intrigued by their work, I decided to grab this CD, and from the first beat I was impressed. There's the familiar tune "My Friend," but the disc reaches its high point on the downright funky "Raisin' The Stakes." Elsewhere, the disc is as smooth as a brush of velvet. Get into this groove and buy this CD today.

I had heard maybe one track from this CD on internet radio and decided to dive in and buy it.
I was blown away. The styles are amazingly varied from song to song without the transitions seeming jarring. Production is great with layered sounds straight through and you have everything from dance/hip hop to softer ambient stuff. A solid, solid album.

Probably one of the best albums of the year, Groove Armada continue to explore new ideas, and offer up a musical buffet of sounds. In contrast to their second album, Vertigo which was mostly downtemp and chill, the title of this album foreshadows where these blokes are headed. This album incorporates live insrumentations as well as clever sampling. The first track, Suntoucher, blends hip-hop rhymes and disco orchestrations to create a head bopping sensation. The second track, Superstylin' is a fierce mix of reggae dub vocals and foot stomping house beats that beckons one to dance. One of the finest tracks, Fogma, is nasty groove at its best and one can't help but play it over and over. They even revisit old school rap and breath new life into it in track 8, Raisin the Stakes. Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub) is a befitting title for this album, proving that these blokes are moving up off the sofa and stepping onto the dancefloor. It definitely needs to be heard several times for it to be appreciated and once it finds its way into your cd player it will be there for a while. Its perfect driving music, getting ready to go out music, and it definitely satisfies when having a few friends round for drinks. An album with great energy, Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub) is an evolution of two very talented musicians with great taste in music and an ear to the dancefloor.

4.5 Stars - Almost as good as Vertigo,

Probably most famous for the Sex And The City Theme or the classic "Shaking that A**", this UK duo is made by London DJs Tom Findlay and Andy Cato comes back with a great album. This new production by Groove Armada is a very solid recording, with the participation of artists such as Richie Havens ("Little by Little" and "Healing.") My favorite track all in all, "Lazy Moon" -one of the best down tempo songs in a VERY long time! 'Vertigo,' their previous album, and its remixes I loved, so they become really hard to beat. Otherwise, I'd give it five stars.

Since their inception into the underground club/electronic scene, GA has been hailed as one of the brightest in the industry, drawing praise from and collaboration with people like Madonna and Elton John. With the follow-up to their smash debut Vertigo which established them on the electronic map, they had a lot to follow. And....Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub) does live up to expectations. A fair mix of rap-funk music and ambient chill-out tracks, expect nothing too similar from Vertigo. The excellent first single showcases GA's deep inclinations with the use of beats and rap-funk-hiphop in their music. There are a few tracks in the same vein (Raising The Stakes, Tuning In). There's also the use of guitars in chill-out tracks like the gorgeous My Friend and Little By Little. Excellent sophormore.

A pleasently feel good trip.,

Same old GA winning formula, the trick they have is exploring the mainstays of dance and ambient chill in the main and adding a thematic twist to each album. It works so well becuase they study their craft and bring something truly original to each album, something copycat artists do not even come close to achieving. Each album is a joyous celebration of a musical style and this "hip hop" trip is no exception. A treat for the ear canal!

I don't know why i arrived to this cd only in the 2004!Never too late, in this case. Infact for a long periods i considered Groove Armada likes the band of "My Friend" a nice song but...nothing more. I was so wrong that when i listened all the cd...i was disappointed with me....why i discovered this wonderful cd only now? Coming to the cd it's a mix of dub-groove-funk-rock-reggae in a dark hip-hop soul influence. But all this kind of music are mixed in a very originally way. A strong product without any falling down and up, great song are: SUNTOUCHER , SUPERSTYLIN , of course MY FRIEND and also HEALING. I am gonna to buy all the GA products.........it's never too late.

the best cd in my collection,

Contrary to many other reviewers, this cd was my first introduction to GA. I believe it to be far superior to their previous release "Vertigo," which is a fine cd if you like more pop-like sounds. "Goodby Country" delves a bit deeper into bass-hitting tracks, but also includes some mellow tunes as well. My personal favorite is "Little by Little" This cd is probably the most played cd out of the 200+ cds that i own. it is perfect for almost any mood. buy it!

Another Successful Album For The Groove,

I bought this album at its release in 2001. Six years later and I'm still playing the entire album or some of its choice tracks on a regular basis. This is a very good album by Groove Armada. I'm sure it would sound just as fresh today for someone who is not overly familiar with its tracks.
Noteable mentions are "Superstylin'" and "Edge Hill" with the remaining tracks being completely dud-free. One of the best performers to catch live, prove that they can do the studio thing too with Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub). 4/5 stars. |
