Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This is the last episode in the Bad Girl Creek trilogy (Bad Girl Creek; Along Came Mary), and that's a shame, because readers will miss Mapson's quirky, gutsy protagonists and the cozy familiarity of their steadfast friendship. Five years have passed in the lives of girlfriends Beryl, Phoebe, Nance and Ness. Beryl is living in Anchorage on the verge of a breakup with Earl, the man she thought was the love of her life. Phoebe, still in the Central California coastal town of Bayborough-by-the-Sea, is kept busy with the challenge of raising her precocious five-year-old daughter, Sally, and operating the flower business she inherited from her Aunt Sadie. Still mourning the loss of Sally's father, Phoebe resists the idea of a new man in her life until Andrew comes along. Nance and husband James, Phoebe's brother, appear to have it all-looks, money, social position and true love-but lack the one thing they yearn for: a child. And Ness is nursing David, good friend and AIDS sufferer, at a condo they're renting in Tucson, Ariz. The two make a last trip to California since David's dying wish is to view the ocean just one more time. The story unfolds as in the two previous novels-each chapter is told from a different character's point of view-but this time Beryl plays a central role as her breakup with Earl takes a series of bizarre twists and turns. With warmhearted narrative and lively dialogue Mapson has created another good curl-up-by-the-fireplace-with-a-cup-of-cocoa book.

From Booklist

Men may come and men may go, but girlfriends are forever. If that isn't the slogan down at Bad Girl Creek, it ought to be. Beryl's lover, Earl, has mysteriously disappeared, and Ness's dear friend, David, has finally succumbed to AIDS. Meanwhile, a new man has rolled into Phoebe's life, and Nance wants one more chance at motherhood, despite her doctor's and husband's objections. What sustains these four strong and sassy, valiant and vulnerable women through such emotional upheavals is a friendship that is as deep and abiding as the natural world they celebrate. And while girlfriends may be forever, sadly, the "Bad Girl Creek" saga is not. With this installment, Mapson wraps up her beloved trilogy--Bad Girl Creek (2001), Along Came Mary [BKL D 1 02]--much to the dismay of loyal fans who consider Phoebe, Ness, Nance, and Beryl their kindred spirits. Throughout, Mapson has created four distinct personalities, given each her share of the limelight, and imbued them all with a wisdom and philosophy that resonates on both personal and universal levels. I can't believe this is the last of the glorious Bad Girl novels! Phoebe, Nance, Beryl and Ness--I'm going to miss you. In this last remarkable installment, the talented Mapson again gets into the souls of these incredible women--focusing on Beryl, when Earl, the love of her life, mysteriously disappears one evening. What happened and why? Each of these women make inroads into new lives, and Mapson's theme of women's friendships--healing, sustaining and surprising--is pure bliss to read.
Mapson has the ability to tear your heart apart and then soothe and heal. An amazing, amazing, amazing novel.

I have read the two other books in the "Bad Girl Creek" series and eagerly awaited this new one, Goodbye Earl. Like the two others, the novel was completely absorbing, and I was able to pick up right where I left off with the bad girls. The book focused on Beryl, who lived in Alaska, and her life after her lover, Earl, left her suddenly. Also in the book were stories of Phoebe, who was raising her daughter on the flower farm and was courted by a new love, Andrew, and Ness, who lost her husband David due to AIDS. I really felt for these women and actually found myself holding my breath at some parts. I thought the characters were real and grew throughout the book, and by the end I was rooting for all of them to make it--which it seems as though they did. Even if you haven't read the two other books, I highly recommend this one. You'll want to move to the flower farm when you're done.

I enjoyed Goodbye Earl because I had read all the other books that preceded it and felt a fondness for the characters. I was disappointed in Earl's being a jerk, but that's life, isn't it...and without revealing his deceit and his bad behavior, the book couldn't have stood alone. At least he was a generous jerk, so I'll give a few points to him. The author didn't leave her readers without hope for the characters at the end. Too bad this was the last of the series.

This book was another good one in the series of " Bad Girl Creek Novels". I just had to know what happened to the girls as their lives continued. The author has a real handle on women's feeling and hopes and dreams.

This book had depth and bittersweet loneliness in the suspenseful story of Earl and Beryl, set in a well-described Alaska. But the lusty bird-whispering man was the best part...come back, bird man, who needs Earl when you're around?
