Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Growing interest in the field of sleep research and its accompanying increased clinical observation has led to a better understanding of insomnia, a problem affecting half of our adult citizens. Dunkell, director of the Insomnia Medical Services in New York and former assistant professor of psychiatry at Cornell University Medical College, believes that 90 percent of insomniacs can be helped or cured by the treatments he advocates. His highly readable text analyzes the sleep problems of children, adults, and seniors and offers intellectual discussions on relaxation techniques, sleep hygiene, sleep positions, types of insomnia, and gender and sleep. The chapter devoted to dreams is both fascinating and relevant. An excellent, practical source for chronic insomniacs, this is compelling reading for anyone interested in research, techniques, and recent discoveries concerning the healthful benefits of sleep. The comprehensive appendix lists detailed, practical behavior therapies for insomnia. Recommended for most collections.

This review is from: Goodbye Insomnia, Hello Sleep (Mass Market Paperback)
When you go to the doctor with a sleep problem, don't be surprised when the doctor tells you to educate yourself about it. After some research, seems to me, that's going to be the most important part in the cure. Fortunately, there are good books to help you to do so. I found that Samuel Dunkell's "Goodbye insomnia, hello sleep" is a very helpful book. Very informative on how we sleep, how we dream, how our inner clock works, what causes insomnia, on the different types of insomnia, and on how can we get rid of it. Writes about a lot of contributing factors. The author also writes about actual patients, explains their cases, and the solutions. That makes the book lengthier (300+ pages), but makes it a lot easier to understand, and more entertaining too. I would recommend it not only for people with sleep problems, but for anybody, who wants to understand these things better, and wants to learn, how to get the most out of the night and the day. Because the difference between having a goodnight sleep or not is - night and day...
