2.0 out of 5 stars Tinny Sound
The sound on this cd was very bad. Using my imagination I could hear the way the songs sounded originally, but this cd was a big disappointment. Would not recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Album, Awesome 5 Channel Mix, April 27, 2004

It's amazing to think that this Classic Album was produced back in 1973, I Was majorly impressed with the release of the Digitally Remastered CD & then the SACD 5 Channel Release was very impressive, But there has never been a Better sounding Version of this Album than This DVD-Audio. I personally believe that DVD-Audio has a cleaner sound than a corresponding SACD release.

AS a Music Guru ( Molly )here in Australia would say "DO Yourself a Favor" and Even If your not a complete Elton Fan like myself GO and buy this release and see what A true CLASSIC Album sounds like now in 2004 in Awesome 5 Channel DVD-Audio sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars DVD Audio Almost as good as SACD, April 18, 2007
This review is from: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Ac3) (Dol) (DVD Audio)
Hybrid/SACD's are the new wave in music, but this DVD version is right up there with the SACD format. This is one of them - one of Elton John's greatest achievements. I compared this Hybrid to my regular SACD and CD versions. The sound is crisper and definitely separated between the five speakers (not counting the subwoofer). The rear speakers accentuated guitars and synthesizers/keyboards I had never heard before. Sure, it's more expensive, but buy it and sell your old version on Amazon! This also sounds great on just a regular CD player. "Funeral For A Friend" sounds like a new recording in this format and the extra songs are a welcome addition. I can't wait until more CD's are re-released in this format.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must own, July 12, 2008
This review is from: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Ac3) (Dol) (DVD Audio)
Every audiophile and/or Elton John fan should have this. To have what many consider Elton's masterpiece rendered in higher definition audio as well as a 5.1 mix is a real treat. The mix is overall very well balanced and sounds wonderful! I would have liked a bit more use of the 5.1 capability on "Funeral For A Friend", but that of course is up to personal taste. The extras on this disc are terrific, which include some B side material as well as a great acoustic guitar oriented version of "Candle In The Wind". There is also some great video interviews with producer and arrangers, including some great insight at a mixing console with the original master tape cued up. If you don't have this in your collection, you are truly missing out. Acquire it immediately.

There are relatively few albums available in Surround Sound; you want to make sure to get all of the good ones (if your sound system can play them). This is definitely a good one. You can really tell that the producer went out of his way to make sure the quality of the Surround Sound mix is up to par with Elton John's best album. Now that I've heard this version, I don't want to listen to Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding any other way.

It is a good album, not an amazing surround effect but it does something, it has breathtaking high fidelity by the way, the bonus track of Candle in the Wind (Acoustic) makes this album worth every cent, the voice is So Clear, and the acoustic guitars Oh my...!, the rest of the disc is good, three or four songs are not exactly my kind of music but the slow songs are excellent to enjoy both, great music and great audio quality. This disc is not expensive, buy it and you won't regret.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, October 6, 2008

While I'm not the biggest fan of Elton John, I do have a healthy respect for his work. Particularly his early work. This will make a fine (almost mandatory) addition to your (now defunct) DVD-A collection. It is simply stellar in it's dynamic range, use of surround, and clarity. Some mixes can be fatiguing due to over-use of the side and rear surrounds, but this one is "just right". Hi-res audio is a must for any audiophile, and this disc does not disappoint. 5-stars, without any hesitation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love DVD Audio! Keep them coming., November 11, 2008
This review is from: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Ac3) (Dol) (DVD Audio)
Great album and a treat to hear it in High Res surround. The mixes (or the mastering) aren't as good as the originals but far more dynamic for the Res and surround. I hope this formats survives the low res movement!
