Editorial Reviews

Review

It's here. It's improved. It's worth the cost of replacing prior editions. It's well worth the time to read....The 11th text edition and first digital edition of the classic Goodman and Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics is a worthy successor to all that has come before....The exciting addition to this textbook is the digital edition, an Internet site where the full text of the book appears, with quality reproductions of all figures and tables. This is much more than another copy of the textbook: each section has links to updates (articles describing recent developments related to that chapter, including newer drugs), to related sections of the textbook, and to clinical practice guidelines and patient education materials. Included on the Internet site are access to the Gold Clinical Pharmacology database, with extensive information about prescription and over-the-counter medications, continuously updated; pictures of most solid and liquid dosage forms; and ample discussion of potential drug-drug interactions. Newly approved drugs are included, and all drugs, not just class prototypes, get thorough treatment. Many parts of this digital edition can be transferred to readers' various electronic devices: computer, cell phone, digital organizer, or music player....should be within arm's reach of all who prescribe drug therapy. If only theyd take the time to read it."--Journal of the American Medical Association. . (Journal of American Medical Association )

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT AS VALUABLE AS MADE OUT INITIALLY, December 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Goodman and Gilman's Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics Digital Edition (Hardcover)
The hardcover edition is by necessity one of those books that, because of its weight, is a pure reference book. That is, one takes it off the library shelve only if one has to look something up. Because of this I would not have bought it if it had not said that there would be a simultaneous digital edition that could be accessed with an Internet Subscription Access Code from any computer. That caught my eye because that's what I wanted: A quick reference I could get from anywhere I would be at that particular moment. What I overlooked was -and that is absolutely my fault- that this online access would be only available for the duration of the print edition. In other words, as soon as a new edition would appear, the online access would be cut off. Now, if I would not have overlooked it, I might have called McGraw-Hill and asked when the next edition would come out. But I did overlook it and the next edition came out within 12 months...! I complained to McGraw-Hill and they graciously offered free online access for 12 more months. After that, I guess, I will have to rely on the PDR again. Conclusion: Would I buy the Goodman & Gilman's again? No. Not with this time-limited online access.

2.0 out of 5 stars no completely updated digital edition, June 22, 2009
This review is from: Goodman and Gilman's Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics Digital Edition (Hardcover)
This edition isn't more convenient than the cheaper not digitalized 2005 one, not permitting full update from 2005 till now (June 2009) and digital update ending by August 2009. As it doesn't fully contain the new edition subjects, we're all waiting for the next normal edition.
