Raw and Irreverent!,
By Dean Reed (Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Goodnight Dear (Audio CD)
I stumbled on to this CD and bought it on a hunch, and it was one of the best hunches I've ever had. This CD is full to the brim with good, solid Blues that a listener can sink their teeth into! Despite the modern sounding name, this bank is playing the Blues in the old tradition, the way it was intended-- raw and rough and irreverent. I have had this CD for about a year, and it has become one of the time-tested favorites in my collection. The band is gritty and witty. You can't miss with this disc!

I found out about Microwave Dave & The Nukes after reading Stephen King's final column in Entertainment Weekly - the January 7, 2011 edition. I am so glad I took a few minutes to read the column and then follow through on Uncle Stevie's advice. He mentioned their performance of "Highway 49" on YouTube; I watched and listened to that and then tracked down this album.
There's not a song on this album that I dislike. This is rip snorting blues at its best. I especially like: Last Call For Alcohol Born to Boogie Woogie Don't You Just Know It Start Me To Drinkin' Highway's Like A Woman I love discovering new (to me) talent and hearing great music. This album surely fits that description. Thanks for the swan "song" advice, Uncle Stevie.

After hearing this group on the 'What do Ya Know?' show on NPR I decided to get their CD for my husband. This is a fun, gritty, upbeat kind of blues CD that both my husband and I have enjoyed a lot. Not a lot of polish, but if it was then it wouldn't be the blues, right?

I have seen Dave and the Nukes in person three times and each time they seem to get better. Dave KNOWS the blues and knows how to have fun playing it. You can't go wrong with this cd.

I have this CD and one of their other ones, "Wouldn't Lay My Guitar Down", and they both are super. I have been following Dave and the Nukes since 1997 when I first saw them at Bike Week in Daytona Beach, Fl. I was instantly blown away by their sound. I have been an ardent fan ever since, and try to see them whenever I can. I have introduced their music to a lot of my friends and they are now fans of the Nukes. Keep up the good work Dave, Rick and Skip. You guys rock!

If you like hard driving R&B, this is a great album. My son heard the group perform in Aiken, SC and immediately ordered the CD for me (knowing I'm a big R&B fan). Each track moves from fast to slow to hard moving, toe tapping slammers. The vocals and the music mixes harmonica, drums and guitar like few white men could do. If you like Johnny Lang, you'll love this group.

Super Group - Super Review,

Never heard of these guys before and like one of the reviewers says, "stumbled across the album", but I couldn't resist getting on board with all the other good folk who wrote about it. Great songs, outstanding musicians, fantastic rhythms all find each other on one sho' nuff, sleeper CD. Couldn't recommend it more. If you produce dances (as I do) BUY IT! If they can't dance to "Roadrunner", they ain't got no feet!!" ; )

I truly think that all things considered, these guys are one of the best southern blues bands around today. Besides being great artist, Dave, Rick and Skip are wonderful people and great friends. We met at the Riverbend Festival here a few years ago and travel to see them when we can. And I can truly say...."these boys can eat", especially my wife's bananna pudding!! I was so sorry to see Skip leave but things like this happen. We have everything "the Nukes" have ever done plus Dave's new solo CD.........EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!

I used to see these guys play in Decatur & Huntsville Alabama. They sound just as good on cd, it's not the same as kicking back in a small semi smoke filled bar / deli...but hey a top notch album all the same!
