Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1–3—Imitation can indeed be sincere flattery, as Rex proves in his slightly eerie reworking of Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd's classic bedtime tale. The young bunny has been replaced by a little monster, but he still wears striped pajamas as he lies in his bed and says good night to his surroundings. "In the cold gray tomb/There was a gravestone/And a black lagoon/And a picture of—Martians taking over the moon." The parody is clever, matching original verse with rhymes that seem unforced and appropriate for the new setting: "Goodnight skull/And goodnight shoe/Goodnight creature/Goodnight goo/And goodnight to the old werewolf hollering 'Boo.'" Rex's color drawings create a monster child's bedroom filled with the same late-evening light of Hurd's illustrations. The book ends on the same peaceful note as the original. A clever offering just right for graduates of bedtimes with Goodnight Moon.—Kathleen Whalin, York Public Library, ME

Goodnight Moon happens to be one of my all-time favorite children's books, so I was really looking forward to reading Goodnight Goon.

This book is so very awesome and I am so NOT very awesome with written reviews. But, nonetheless, I will try because this little book needs to be out there and READ.

First and foremost - I simply love Halloween and am always on the hunt for good Halloween books. This book did not disappoint. The illustrations are excellent and the rhyme is the same cadence as with Goodnight, Moon. Adults who love Halloween and kids who love Goodnight, Moon will all equally enjoy this book.

Every page is chockful of images to peruse and discover. FUN images that are still spooky, scary and frightful without being overly gruesome for little brains. I see this being a classic for our family for years to come.

Our family has enjoyed Micheal Rex's books for years but this one is the best! It is a wonderful, fun parody of the children's classic, "Goodnight Moon" (appropriate for all ages). My children loved the spin on the classic, a book they know by heart! Parents - add it to your collection! Teachers - what a great resource for teaching how to write a parody or just as a great Halloween story (but can also be read throughout the year!). It will hopefully become a classic just like the original. We hope Michael Rex finally gets the recognition he deserves as an author and illustrator!

I discovered this book today and, being a HUGE fan of Goodnight Moon, I was so excited! This book is adorable and is so fun for Halloween. I am sure it would be cute even if you have not read Goodnight Moon, but if you are familiar with Goodnight Moon, it is hilarious! I am excited to read this book to my son!

Also, check out Michael Rex's new Runaway Mummy: A Petrifying Parody for a hilarious Halloween scream!

Saw this on an end cap at Target and thought it was Goodnight Moon. Looked closer and cracked up at the cover and title. Pure genius to parody a timeless classic. The inside didn't disappoint. Great rhymes that served the original but were completely loony and fun. The drawings are great and I immediately bought it for my son. I hope Michael Rex sells a million of them!

My 5 year old loved this book! At first, she was confused and didn't find it as amusing as mom and dad do. Then, after reading it side by side with 'Goodnight Moon', she was finally getting it.

Wonderful for the Halloween holiday!

This is a very entertaining parody of the classic children's book Goodnight Moon, and is best appreciated if, like my two four year olds, one is already familiar with the original. The text and illustrations follow the pattern of the original closely, especially in the first half. Some of the characters are monstrous versions of those in the original book, and others are new, but all of them are beautifully but grotesquely drawn monsters. My only slight disappointment was that the author did not copy what I think is the most disturbing page of the original book: the blank page "Goodnight nobody"!

This book _may_ be a little much for kids that are old enough to be afraid of spook stories (my 18-month-old, on the other hand, loves it and laughs at all the pictures). It is hilarious however, and for parents like me who can't stand being forced through another reading of "Goodnight Moon," it's just what the doctor ordered. Even if you don't ever read it to anyone else, get a copy for yourself-- just don't let your laughter wake up the kids.

My daughter loves ghosts, bats, spiders, and anything related to Halloween, so we purchased this book recently. It has been a big hit. Not only is it well written, the illustrations are wonderful. The pictures are so detailed that my daughter is constantly discovering new things in them. She loved "Goodnight Moon," so she can relate to the text as well. This book is incredibly well done. It's fun for adults as well as kids.
