COMPLETE YOUR DM COLLECTION AT A PRICE, July 5, 2002
Goodnight Lovers is the 4th single for DM's Exciter album for some nations. No effort is provided with the first track. Unlike most of their singles, the single version of Goodnight Lovers is simply the album version(3:50). But another take on the song is track four, Goodnight Lovers - ISAN FALLING LEAF MIX(5:53), which has extra water rippling effects added at start and end. Adds to the mellow feel of this release. Then what is in line with this release is When The Body Speaks - ACOUSTIC VERSION(6:02). A beautiful track that is identical to the album version, only without the use of any electronics. In between is track three The Dead Of Night - ELECTRONICAT REMIX (7:38), which goes in a completely distorted direction, using a repetitive bass & treble note combination with a reverb so loud that even the singing can barely be heard. It is a step back from the shorter album EXCITER version. Would have enjoyed EASY TIGER remixes here from other remixes to keep the mellow feel. CAN SEE why the US did not get a release. No dance club feel here! But for collectors this release shows that the band is talented stripped down.
This Australian release is packaged in a cardboard format so cut paste and replastic it yourself for collection purposes.

U.S. DM Fans Deserve a U.S. Release of this Single!, March 12, 2002
This review is from: Goodnight Lovers (Audio CD)
Goodnight Lovers has been chosen to become the fourth single for DM's Exciter album. Nothing extra is done with the track. Unlike most of their singles, which get a little extra remix or shortening done to them, the single version of Goodnight Lovers is simply the album version(3:50). But another take on the song is also included: Goodnight Lovers - Isan FALLING LEAF MIX(5:53), which gives the song an even more quieter & personal feel to it, by opening the song with little electronic drops of water giving off a crescendo/rippling effect, accompanied by a synthesizer with very few other electronic sounds added. You really get to hear David Gahan's voice even more clearly than before. Very intimate. Another excellent track is When The Body Speaks - ACOUSTIC VERSION(6:02). This was the song I personally thought should've become the fourth single off of Exciter and the acoustic version only enhances that reasoning. A beautiful track that is identical to the album version, only without the use of any electronics. You just get the orchestra in the background, Martin Gore's wonderful guitar playing & David Gahan's hauntingly sweet and gentle voice, heard crystal clear for the first time. It almost makes me wonder if DM, at one point, had considered a non electronic album, but then decided against it? The one track that may take getting use to for some fans is The Dead Of Night - ELECTRONICAT REMIX (7:38), which goes in a completely dark direction, using a repetative bass & treble note combination with a reverb so loud that even Dave & Martin's voices can barely be heard. In fact at first I wasn't even sure it was their voices, it sounded so distorted. It's a long track you can get into after repeat listenings.
I am from the U.S.A. and a huge fan of Depeche Mode. But I've been reading that there are no plans to release this single in the U.S., and I for one am outraged that Mute Records would do such a thing! I've been collecting DMs Singles since the '80s, and never has any of their singles not been made available here in the states. So I've been forced to pay the extra bucks for the UK version to own it, but it's not the same. For one thing, the UK CD single is housed in a small cardboard sleeve that can be easily ruined. I'd much prefer the standard jewel case (which is what all other CD singles from Exciter are stored in, here in the USA). They're easy to replace if they get broken and are much easier to use to display my singles collection all together. I employ all U.S. fans of DM to let Mute Records know that we deserve our own release of this wonderful single!

A decent modern single, no bad dance remixes, January 13, 2006
Great single, good mixes/versions. I hate a great number of the more modern mixes on many other singles (of any group), which seem to consist of nothing more than small bits of the original song and an extremely annoying thumping beat (what ever happened to the good extended mixes and weird (in a good way) alternate versions from the 80's?). This is not a problem on this single, and it is very good. The only problem is that they could have done a better job on the The Dead Of Night mix, basically covering up the vital quieter parts of the song rather than doing something interesting to enhance them. The other two mixes/versions are great. I'd highly recommend this single.
