Briarpatch has made one of the book's tranquil illustrations the centerpiece for a board game designed with the very youngest of players in mind. The board features a gentle nursery scene, with mittens and socks drying before a fire, kittens tussling sleepily on a braided rug, and the moon slowly coming into view in a star-sprinkled night sky. Four smaller (9-by-6-inch) playing boards are each divided into six squares, with snapshot scenes taken from the larger board; 24 sturdy, kid-proof matching cards complete the set. The game itself features six graduated levels of play. In the first, and simplest, level, everyone wins, and children as young as 2 1/2 years old are introduced to the concept of taking turns. As levels progress (and children mature), kids learn to match colored cards with colored illustrations, then black-and-white ones, and fine-tune their memory skills by recalling the picture on an upside-down card. At the most sophisticated level of play, a child will need to determine just which card is missing from the full set. Even at this level the rules of the game prevent bruised feelings by ensuring that every kid gets at least one card.
